Baylor Soccer Defeats Iowa State, 3-2

AMES, Iowa – Baylor soccer defeated Iowa State, 3-2, Thursday night at the Cyclone Sports Complex.

The Bears who are now 4-7-2 on the season, 2-3-0 in conference play, netted the game winner in the 87th minute to secure the win.

THE RUNDOWN
After giving up a goal in the 5th minute, the Bears found their rhythm as Gabby Mueller put a shot on goal before Reneta Vargas scored her fourth goal of the season off of a pass from Ashley Merrill in the 19th minute.

Iowa state took the lead again in the late in the first half off of a corner kick, to go up 2-1.

Not wasting any time, the Bears answered five minutes later with a goal of their own in the 44th minute. Elizabeth Kooiman lined up a shot from distance, on an assist from Sarah Hornyak, and found the back of the net for her first goal of the season.

Kooiman carried the momentum into the second half getting off shots but the Bears weren’t able to find the go-ahead goal until the 87th minute. With the game knotted at 2-2, leading goal scorer, Vargas, found her fifth goal of the season with the help of Ashley Merrill, for the second time.

Lauren Traywick sealed the win with a save in the 90th minute, her third save of the game.

  *   Reneta Vargas netted two goals in a game for second time in a week, including game winners in both.

  *   Sarah Hornyak recorded her second assist this season
