Nine Bears find a spot in Saturday’s national quarterfinal

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Baylor track and field had 11 total student-athletes advance to the next rounds in Day Two of the NCAA West Preliminaries, with 9 to the quarterfinals and 2 with a ticket punched to Hayward Stadium in Eugene.



“Solid job today from the ladies,” said head coach Michael Ford. “We had a lot advance to the quarterfinals on Saturday. Caira (Pettway) and Alex (Madlock) did a super job in the long jump to advance to Eugene.”



Madlock fought back on her last attempt of the long jump to land a 20-9 ¼ mark for sixth place, while Pettway finished ninth behind her jump of 20-7. Both competitors qualified through to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore., next month.



Ackera Nugent and Alexis Duncan both finished top 3 in their respective heats of the 100-meter hurdles to advance to Saturday’s quarterfinal. Nugent clocked a 13.17-second race, followed by Duncan in 13.32 seconds. Kennedy Bailey just missed that top-24 group, finishing in 27th with a time of 13.57 seconds.



Two more Bears advanced to the next round of competition on Saturday in the 100 meters. Pettway put together the fifth-fastest time of the day, finishing in 11.33 seconds, while Sydney Washington finished in 15th after 11.48. Demitra Carter and Bria Bullard also competed, finishing 38th and 40th, respectively.



The quarter mile quarterfinal will feature two Baylor Bears in Kavia Francis and Imaobong Uko on Saturday evening. Francis finished the preliminary race in 10th place, flashing a 52.61, while Uko followed in 16th with 53.14.



Aaliyah Miller clocked a 2:05.96 to win her heat of the 800 meters by two seconds and advance onward to Saturday’s competition. Shortly after, Gontse Morake secured her spot in Saturday’s quarterfinals, finishing 13th overall in the 400-meter hurdles.



Mariah Ayers found a qualifying spot in the 200-meter quarterfinals after finishing 10th overall with a 23.1-second mark.



Tuesdi Tidwell fought hard to a 13th-place finish in the pole vault, missing a spot in Oregon by just one position. Tidwell cleared 13-5¾ on Friday



Day Three begins at 5 p.m. on Friday with the men’s 4x100-meter relay finals. All competitors must finish top-12 in the final two days to advance to the national championships in Eugene.
