THE RUNDOWN
FORT WORTH, Texas – Baylor women’s tennis had a strong start to the weekend’s ITA Regionals. Overall, the Bears went 6-2 in singles action on Friday.

Paula Barañano defeated Texas Tech’s Olivia Peet in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. However, Barañano dropped her second contest, 7-6(4), 1-6, 0-1 (6-10) to 14th seed Malaika Rapolu of Texas.

Ninth-seeded Alicia Herrero Linana swept through her opening match, 6-2, 6-2, over SFA’s Nyah Kauders. In her second match of the day, Herrero Linana battled to win a tiebreaker in the first set before taking charge in the second to win her match, 7-6(3), 6-2, over UTSA’s Aleksandra Zlatarova.

Ana Carmen Zamburek won a three-set thriller, 6-4, 1-6, 1-0 (12-10), over UT Arlington's Ana Paula Jimenez. She then faced fifth-seeded Kylie Collins of Texas and fell, 6-3, 6-2.

Mel Krywoj had no problem with her opening match, winning 6-0, 6-0 over Incarnate Word’s Lauren Fulgenzi. The senior, and second seed in the tournament, followed up that performance with a 6-1, 6-3 victory against Houston’s Laura Slisane.

Herrero Linana and Krywoj move on to the Round of 16. Herrero Linana will face seventh-seed Jackie Nylander of SMU, and Krywoj will play Jasmine Adams of North Texas. Both matches will begin at 10:30 a.m.

Doubles play begins for the Bears on Saturday. The 10th seeded duo of Barañano and Zamburek will face UTA’s Carla Pons and Nika Novikova. Meanwhile, Herrero Linana and Krywoj, the second seed in the bracket, will take on Texas State’s Hana Kvapilova and Rishona Israel-Lewis. Both matches will begin at 9 a.m.

  *   For the first time since 2017, Baylor has a pair of Bears advancing to the Round of 16 at the ITA Regionals.
  *   Alicia Herrero Linana is 2-0 to start the season.
  *   Mel Krywoj and Paula Barañano are each now 3-2 this season.
