HUNTSVILLE, Texas – No. 14 Baylor Softball run ruled Sam Houston, 8-0, Tuesday night at the Bearkat Softball Complex.

THE RUNDOWN
The Bears started the game off strong when Taylor Strain and Emily Hott hit back-to-back singles to start the game. After a sacrifice bunt moved runners to second and third, Shaylon Govan walked to load the bases. The Bears’ first run of the game came home after a wild pitch advanced all the runners.

After giving up a leadoff hit, RyLee Crandall struck out two in the bottom of the first to keep the Bearkats off the board.

In the top of the second Shannon Vivoda hit a leadoff home run, the first of her career, to put the Bears up 2-0. Strain then doubled and moved to third on a groundout before coming home to score on a single off the bat of Sydney Collazos.

After allowing the leadoff batter aboard in the second inning, Crandall picked up two more strikeouts to again hold Sam Houston scoreless.

SHSU threatened in the bottom of the third after the leadoff batter walked and deep fly ball to left field, but Hott made a catch just over the wall to rob the Sam Houston home run.

With two outs in the top of the fourth, Hott then homered, her second long ball of the season.

With the 4-0 lead, Baylor tacked on four runs in the top of the fifth.

Starting things off, Govan walked and Kaci West singled to the pitcher to put two on for Ana Watson. The sixth-year senior then tripled to the right-center field wall to score both runs. With two runs already home Leah Cran singled to third base, scoring Watson and giving the Bears the 7-0 lead. After advancing to second on a wild pitch, pinch-hitter Emry McDonough doubled to left-center to plate the Bears’ eighth run of the game.

After loading the bases in the bottom of the fifth, Ava Knoll picked up a game-ending strikeout as the Bears took the run-rule victory over the Bearkats.
