Bears win at Long Island’s inaugural home opener

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – No. 1 Baylor acrobatics & tumbling defeated Long Island on Tuesday, 276.405 to 242.675, at the Pratt Recreation Center to finish the New York road trip for the Bears.

The Bears (5-0) defeated the Sharks (0-3) by 33.73 points for the win in LIU’s inaugural home meet and first matchup with the Bears.

The Bears increase their winning streak to 32 meets, dating back to March 27, 2021.

THE RUNDOWN
Starting off the meet, Baylor had a Compulsory score of 38.50. A score of 9.50 was garnered in Acro, 9.90 in Pyramid, 9.90 in Toss and an 9.20 in Tumbling. Going into the second event, BU was up 38.50 to LIU’s 35.35 score.

Moving into the optional portion of the meet, Baylor had a score of 9.95 in Heat 1 (5-Element), 9.75 in Heat 2 (6-Element) and 9.85 in Heat 3 (7-Element) of Acro to total 29.55 for the event. BU upped its season high in heat two. It was the second meet in a row where Jordan Gruendler and Bayley Humphrey debuted a new element to the sport in heat three, with Gruendler popping off from a hand-to-hand connection with Humphrey into a hand-to-foot connection, called a “corbit” in acrobatic gymnastics. The Sharks had scores of 9.05, 6.60 and 9.25 respectively, for a total of 24.90, a season high. Going into the Pyramid event, BU was up 68.05 to LIU’s 60.25.

In the Pyramid event, the Bears earned a 9.95 in Heat 1, the inversion heat. Baylor successfully competed the “pencil” in the heat for the second time, where Gruendler starts in a handstand, removes a hand, and then effectively slenderizes into the “pencil” before dismounting. In heat two, BU earned a 9.75, the synchronized heat. In heat three, the open heat, the Bears scored a perfect 10, the first of the season in any heat. With the event scoring a 29.70, a season high, the running total was updated to 97.75 for Baylor. LIU totaled 27.60 for the event and had a score of 87.85 going into halftime, the Bears up by 9.90 points.

In the Toss Event, Baylor had scores of 9.70, 9.10 and 8.90, respectively, to total 27.70 for the event. The Sharks scored an 8.35, 8.35 and 8.80, respectively, to total 25.50. Going into the fifth event, Tumbling, the Bears were up 125.45 to Long Island’s 113.35.

In the Tumbling Event, Heat 1 (Duo) with Emily Bott (FR) and Kristen McCain (SR) scored a 9.40. In the Trio Heat (Heat 2), Payton Washington, Rakel Jeffries and Aliyah Kaloostian scored a 9.30. The Quad Pass (Heat 3) had Aliyah Thomas, Charlyze Hemby, Dailyn Hopkins, and Emi Nelson score an 8.80. The Aerial pass from Bott earned a 9.85, Washington in the 6 Element pass (Heat 5) had a 9.925, and McCain in the Open pass (Heat 6) earned a 9.70. The Bears’ total came to 56.975 for the event, while the Sharks scored a 49.175. Going into the night's final event, BU was up 182.425 to 162.525 from LIU.

In the Team event, Baylor earned a score of 93.98 while Long Island earned an 80.15, bringing the meet score to a total of 276.405 to 242.675, BU taking the win.

HIGHLIGHTS

  *   Baylor extends its win streak to 32 meets in a row, dating back to 2021
  *   The Bears completed a two-meet sweep of New York teams Iona and LIU
  *   BU outscored LIU by 33.73 points
  *   It was Long Island’s inaugural home meet, hosting at the Pratt Recreation Center
  *   Baylor recorded its first 10.0 score of the season in Pyramid Heat 3

The Bears head home and host No. 4 Gannon on March 16 at 5 p.m. CT in the Ferrell Center. It will be senior night for Baylor.
