PHOENIX, Ariz. – Baylor men’s golf recorded a 10th place finish after a final-round 275 on Saturday at the Thunderbird Collegiate.

Davis Ovard and Johnny Keefer led the way with a final round 67 and 68, respectively. Keefer and Luke Dossey closed the weekend as Baylor’s best finishers as they both tied for 27th.

The Bears finished just a shot back of ninth-place Texas Tech, with just 10 shots separating 3rd and 11th place. Host Arizona State captured the team championship with a 38-under 814. Preston Summerhays of the Sundevils captured individual medalist honors with a 12-under-par 201.

THE RUNDOWN
Ovard got off to a great start with two birdies in his first three holes before his first bogey of the day at No. 14. He closed the first nine with a birdie at No. 17 to make the turn at 2-under. He reached 4-under with second-nine birdies at Nos. 1 and 5. The freshman’s final bogey of the day came at No. 6, but he bounced back with a birdie at No. 7 to finish off his 4-under 67 and a tie for 43rd.

Keefer finished tied for 27th after a 3-under 68 on Saturday. The senior started strong with a pair of birdies at Nos. 12 and 15. He carded a bogey at No. 17, but a birdie at No. 18 saw him make the turn at 2-under. Five-straight pars started his second nine, interrupted by a bogey at No. 6. Keefer closed his tournament with back-to-back birdies at Nos. 8 and 9.

Dossey finished tied for 27th on the heels of a final-round 69. The senior’s round got off to a rough start with a double-bogey at No. 10, only to play his next nine holes at 5-under with birdies at Nos. 12, 15 and 18 and an eagle at No. 1. A bogey at No. 2 was his final of the day to finish off his final round.

Tyler Isenhart shot his best round of the weekend with an even-par 71 to finish tied for 66th. Isenhart authored a clean card on his opening nine with a birdie at No. 15 to turn with a 1-under 34. A bogey at No. 1 was his first of the day but was offset by a birdie at No. 3. His final bogey of the day came at No. 5 to finish off his final-round 71.

Zach Heffernan finished off his weekend with a 1-over 72 to tie for 43rd. An early birdie at No. 12 was offset by a bogey at No. 14. He bounced back with a birdie at No. 15 before closing his first nine with bogeys at Nos. 17 and 18. Heffernan pulled back to even with a birdie at No. 1 but dropped two shots with bogeys at Nos. 4 and 5. A weekend that started with eight birdies in the first round ended with a final birdie at No. 6 to close out the weekend for the junior.

HIGHLIGHTS

  *   Baylor moved up four spots in the final round, matching Big-12 Rival Oklahoma State biggest move of the day.
  *   BU’s 52 birdies were the third-most in the field this weekend.
  *   The Bears’ final-round 275 was its third-lowest single-round score this season and tied for the 29th lowest round in program history.
  *   275 tied for the second-best round of the day on Sunday.
  *   With his final-round 67, Davis Ovard joined Zach Heffernan in setting or tying career-low rounds this week.
  *   Keefer’s final-round 68 was his lowest score since shooting a second-round 68 at the Cabo Collegiate at the beginning of last month.
  *   Keefer’s career stroke average improved to 71.57, .02 strokes behind the all-time Baylor record of 71.55 set by Jimmy Walker.
  *   Isenhart improved his score in each of the final two rounds.

QUOTABLE
Head coach Mike McGraw — “This final round was exactly what this team needed for momentum heading into the Big 12 Championship tournament. We’ve so got some time this week to clean up a few things that gave us trouble in round two.”
