AUSTIN, Texas – No. 37 Baylor men’s tennis fell to the fourth-ranked Texas Longhorns in the final Big 12 Conference matchup at the Texas Tennis Center on Saturday evening, 7-0.

In the match controlled by the Longhorns (19-3 (7-0 Big 12)), the Bears (18-10 (2-5 Big 12)) nearly escaped with a doubles win at the third court until the point was clinched, and took the first set at No. 3 singles in a breaker.

THE RUNDOWN

Texas took the first two courts in doubles to take the 1-0 advantage in the match.

Working quickly, 35th-ranked Eliot Spizzirri and Seim Woldeab won a 6-1 match over 33rd-ranked Tadaes Paroulek and Zsombor Velcz. Before Christopher Frantzen and Louis Bowden were able to win their match that stayed unfinished at 5-3, Micah Braswell and Cleeve Harper defeated Oskar Brostrom Poulsen and Devin Badenhorst, 6-4, to clinch the doubles point.

In singles, the Longhorns took five of the six first sets, with the exception of Badenhorst’s 7-3 tiebreak win at the third court.

Harper was first to finish in singles, taking a straight-set match from Brostrom Poulsen, 6-0, 6-3, at the fifth spot moments before Spizzirri, the No. 1 player in the nation, beat No. 90 Velcz, 6-2, 6-2. Second-ranked Braswell beat 62nd-ranked Paroulek for the match clincher, 7-5, 6-1, but play continued at the remaining courts.

Jonah Braswell battled against Marko Miladinović at the six singles court and came up victorious, 6-2, 6-4, as Court Three was wrapping up its 10-point tiebreaker. At No. 3, 35th Gilles-Arnaud Bailly and No. 110 Badenhorst split the first two sets before Bailly took the breaker, 10-8.

Down on the final court, Bowden faced off against 84th-ranked Pierre-Yves Bailly in a match that was nearly split between Sets One and Two, but Bailly fought back to take the match, 6-2, 7-6(5).

UP NEXT

The Bears head back to Stillwater, Okla., for the 2024 Big 12 Championships, where they will face third-seeded TCU in the quarterfinals on Friday at noon.
