WACO, Texas – No. 21 Baylor softball’s late-inning surge powered the Bears past the Houston Cougars, 7-1, Friday night at Getterman Stadium.

The Bears, now 20-5 on the season, plated all seven runs in the sixth inning and took down their future Big 12 foe to win the opening game of the three-game series.

THE RUNDOWN
After four scoreless innings on both sides, the Cougars got on the board first after a one-out home run put Houston ahead, 1-0.

The Bears threatened in the bottom of the fifth, when Josie Bower was hit by a pitch and pinch-runner Taylor Strain stole second. With a runner on and no one out, Strain tried to make the most of an overthrown ball at third but was thrown out at the plate.

After 1-2-3 top of the sixth, Baylor’s bats came to life in the bottom half of the inning. Sparked by a walk from Shaylon Govan, Emily Hott and Amber Toven laid down perfect bunts to load the bases for Sydney Collazos. Collazos recorded her third hit of the game, a single to left field to tie the game at 1-1.

Ana Watson followed that up with a bases-loaded single to plate another run and put the Bears up. With the lead, Kaci West laced a double down the right-field line to bring home two more runs and make it a 4-1 game.

A single from Taylor Strain and a fielder’s choice plated two more before a single up the middle and a strikeout put the Bears up, 6-1 with two outs. The last run of the inning came off of a single from Hott, her second hit of the inning, and scored McKenzie Wilson from second.

HIGHLIGHTS
Sydney Collazos tied a career-high with three hits in a game. Emily Hott also had a multi-hit game, with two singles in the same inning.

Kaci West recorded the only extra-base hit of the game, a two-RBI double.

Dariana Orme pitched her seventh complete game of the season, striking out six and not issuing a single walk.

This is the Bears’ seventh game this season winning by six or more runs.

Six different Bears recorded at least one RBI and eight different Bears recorded a hit.

WHAT’S NEXT
The series continues with game two of a three-game series at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 18, at Getterman Stadium.
