WACO, Texas – Baylor acrobatics & tumbling earned two of the three possible weekly awards from the NCATA, the organization announced Wednesday.

Kamryn Kitchens was named Athlete of the Week while Jordan Gruendler earned Specialist of the Week after their performances in the win over Oregon in Eugene on Mar. 8.

Kitchens, a senior top and tumbler from Kennesaw, Ga., competed in 10 heats as well as the team event against Oregon. She competes in at least one heat in all events throughout the meet. Her performance included eight scores of 9.75 or higher, including a meet-best 9.95 in the compulsory toss and a pair of 9.90 scores in the synchronized pyramid and open toss heats. In the aerial pass, she garnered a score of 9.925. With Kitchens on the mat, the Bears have an average event score of 19.31/19.93 in toss and average aerial tumbling pass score of 9.917/10.

Gruendler, a San Antonio, Texas native, competed as a top in the first and third pyramid heats for the Bears. She scored a 9.95 in both heats, the inversion and open heats. In the inversion pyramid, she performs an extended handstand on a mid-level base before dismounting from the handstand in a free fall. In the open pyramid, she executes an extended straddle press to handstand on a mid-level base. With Gruendler on the mat in the pyramid event, Baylor averages a score of 19.85 out of a possible 20.

With Gruendler’s latest accolade, BU has now earned the Specialist award after each week of competition this season. This is Gruendler’s second time earning the accolade, the first being in week two of competition, with Riley Chimwala earning it in week one and Bayley Humphrey earning it in week three.

The Bears return to the Ferrell Center mats next week for back-to-back meets, hosting Frostburg State on Wednesday, March 22 and Quinnipiac on Saturday, March 25.
