WACO, Texas – Baylor equestrian Jumping Seat senior Maddie Vorhies has been named the National Collegiate Equestrian Association (NCEA) Flat Rider of the Month for March, as announced by the organization Wednesday afternoon.

Vorhies went 2-0 in Flat in March, averaging an 84.5 across BU’s two meets against No. 1 SMU and No. 3 TCU. She claimed an 87-81 victory in the Bears’ home finale against the top-ranked Mustangs, garnering her Most Outstanding Performer honors, then grabbed an 82-80 win against her Horned Frogs opponent in Fort Worth.

Vorhies’ tally of 87 was the highest score of the day in BU’s Senior Day meet against SMU, helping the Bears’ Flat team to a 4-1 event win. Her 82 at TCU also assisted in Baylor’s 3-2 Flat win over the Horned Frogs.

Since Baylor’s Nov. 4 meet at SMU, Vorhies has gone unbeaten in Flat with six wins and two ties to round out her 2023 campaign. Entering the postseason, she is currently riding a four-meet win streak.

The award marks Vorhies’ first-career monthly honor at either the national or conference level. This is Baylor’s second NCEA Rider of the Month award, as senior Dominika Silvestri was previously recognized in January for Flat. Eight of Baylor’s 11 monthly honors this season have come on the Jumping Seat side.

No. 9 Baylor received the No. 4 seed for the 2023 Big 12 Championship, set to take place in Stillwater, Okla., on March 24-25. The Bears will take on top-seeded and No. 5-ranked Oklahoma State in the opening round.
