BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The Utah Jazz selected Baylor guard Keyonte George with the 16th overall pick in the first round of the 2023 NBA Draft Thursday night.
With George’s selection, the Bears join Duke as one of just two teams to have a top-20 pick in each of the last three drafts. BU has now had 11 draft picks in the last 11 drafts, the most of any team in the state of Texas and the second-most in the Big 12 since 2010.
BU has had 12 NBA Draft picks in the Drew era – Ekpe Udoh (No. 6 in 2010), Perry Jones III (No. 28 in 2012), Quincy Acy (No. 37 in 2012), Quincy Miller (No. 38 in 2012), Pierre Jackson (No. 42 in 2014), Cory Jefferson (No. 60 in 2014), Taurean Prince (No. 12 in 2016), Davion Mitchell (No. 9 in 2021), Jared Butler (No. 40 in 2021), Jeremy Sochan (No. 9 in 2022), Kendall Brown (No. 48 in 2022) and George (No. 16 in 2023).
He’s the ninth first-round pick in program history. Thursday marked the first time BU has had three-straight first-round picks. The Bears have now had 25 all-time draft picks.
George is the second Baylor player selected by the Utah franchise, joining Taurean Prince, the 12th overall pick of the Jazz in 2016.
Fellow draft-eligible Baylor player Adam Flagler can now sign a free-agent contract with any NBA team.
Flagler and George helped lead the Bears to 20 wins and double-digit Big 12 wins for a fifth-straight season. BU earned a No. 3 seed in the NCAA Tournament, one of just four programs to be a three seed or higher in each of the last three NCAA Tournaments, joining Gonzaga, Purdue and Kansas. With a win over UC Santa Barbara, the Bears joined The Jayhawks, Bulldogs and Houston Cougars as one of four programs with at least one win in the last three NCAA tournaments.
George was named the 2023 Big 12 Freshman of the Year while also being tabbed to All-Big 12 Freshman, Newcomer and Second teams. He was BU’s second Big 12 Freshman of the Year and the first since Quincy Miller in 2012. He finished with 506 points, just three points shy of Aaron Bruce’s freshman record while setting a new freshman record for 20-point games in a season (12).
Flagler was one of two players to earn unanimous All-Big 12 First Team honors, in addition to being one of five finalists for the Jerry West Award, which is given to the nation’s top shooting guard. He led the Bears in minutes per game (33.8), points per game (15.6), assists (148) and 3-point field goal percentage.
