WACO, Texas – In a wild second game of the series, Baylor baseball (13-22, 5-9) upset No. 12 Texas (25-12, 7-4) with a five-run comeback in the bottom of the ninth inning on Saturday at Baylor Ballpark in Waco.

Sophomore INF Hunter Teplanszky delivered the walk-off, two-run single that was overturned after review as part of a five-run inning on just two BU hits. Freshman C Zach Mazoch scored the game-tying run, then freshman OF Caleb Bergman slid in safely just before the tag to seal the win.

Freshman LHP/OF Ethan Calder gave the Bears 4.1 frames of great relief work, striking out a career-high five in bridging the game to the late innings. Junior RHP Cole Stasio got the win after recording the final five outs without allowing a baserunner.

THE RUNDOWN
Texas put up a four-spot in the top of the first inning, but Baylor responded emphatically with five runs in the bottom half, chasing the UT starter after just two-thirds of an inning. The first three batters all reached in junior INF/OF Cole Posey, Teplanszky and freshman INF Kolby Branch, then a wild pitch plated the Bears’ first run.

After back-to-back strikeouts, two consecutive walks scored another run, then junior C Harrison Caley tied things with a two-run single. Bergman’s RBI knock gave BU a lead after what amounted to be a 43-minute first inning.

Things were mostly quiet through the fifth, though UT picked up the tying run in the third. In the sixth, the Longhorns added a pair to go ahead 7-5, then plated another two in the top of the eighth to extend their lead to 9-5.

In the bottom of the ninth, BU’s rally began with one out as junior RHP/OF Cole Tremain singled, then advanced on a wild pitch. Two more walks loaded the bases, then back-to-back hit-by-pitches chased in two runs, cutting the UT lead to 9-7.

After Bergman reached on a run-scoring fielder’s choice, Posey walked to load the bases and Teplanszky came through on the first pitch he saw to single in the game-winning runs.

STAT OF THE GAME

QUOTABLE
Head Coach Mitch Thompson
On today’s victory…
“This game is a game that you’ve got to get 27 outs, it’s never over until it’s over. You can’t run out the clock, you can’t take a knee. And that’s what makes it beautiful. So, big, big-time from a bunch of guys. We took walks, we took hit-by-pitches. We had two hits in that inning and scored five. They helped us, but we let them help us. And that’s a big deal.”

Sophomore INF Hunter Teplanszky
On his walk-off hit…
“That’s every kid’s dream. You sit in the backyard and dream of bottom of the ninth, two outs, you gotta win a baseball game. That’s the way I kind of looked at it. The moment you dream of. There was really no pressure. I just took the same approach as I did all game, that I’m going to go get my pitch and execute it.”

Freshman LHP/OF Ethan Calder
On pitching in long relief…
“I liked going out there. Every time you go out there you just say, I need to give my offense a chance here. The offense had been getting better so my only goal going in there was to keep it as close as I could and get [our offense] back up to swing.”

WHAT’S NEXT
Baylor (13-22, 5-9) and No. 12 Texas (25-12, 7-4) return for a rubber game on Sunday, April 16, with a 1 p.m. first pitch at Baylor Ballpark.
