LAWRENCE, Kan. – Baylor baseball (9-19, 2-7) was swept at Kansas (12-14, 3-3) on Sunday after a narrow 5-4 ballgame at Hoglund Ballpark in Lawrence, Kan.

The Bears took a 4-3 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning, but solo home runs in back-to-back frames pushed the Jayhawks past BU to claim the series finale.

Freshman INF Kolby Branch hit his fourth home run of the season, while sophomore INF Hunter Teplanszky recorded his ninth multi-hit game of the year. Junior RHP/OF Cole Tremain collected his first-career two-hit day and drove in a run for the Bears.

THE RUNDOWN
After Kansas opened the scoring with a run in the bottom of the first, Baylor responded quickly with a two-spot in the top of the second. Junior INF/OF Cole Posey led off the inning with a double, then moved to third on sophomore 1B John Ceccoli’s infield single. Freshman C Walker Polk brought the run in with a groundout, then Tremain chased in another with an RBI knock to right field.

In the bottom of the third, KU evened the tally with an RBI double, but Branch put the Bears back in front with a solo blast in the top of the fifth.

The Jayhawks would once again knot the scoreline in the bottom of the sixth with a two-out RBI single, but BU charged back in front in the top of the seventh thanks to Teplanszky’s RBI double.

Though trailing 4-3, Kansas would have the last laughs as solo home runs in back-to-back innings put the Jayhawks in front for good at 5-4. The Bears got a leadoff baserunner on in the ninth, but couldn’t advance him as they dropped their seventh game in a row.

QUOTABLE
Head Coach Mitch Thompson
On today’s game…
“Tough one to end up losing. Giving up those two solo homers there in the seventh and eighth was disappointing and frustrating for the guys. We competed hard, played pretty good baseball, just frustrating not to come out on top. I liked the effort from the fellas and we’re going to keep trying to bounce back and working hard, but it’s obviously a punch in the gut and tough one to swallow today.”

WHAT’S NEXT
Baylor (9-19) returns to Waco for four games at home next week, starting with a midweek matchup against Stephen F. Austin (13-13) on Tuesday, April 4, at 6:30 p.m. at Baylor Ballpark.
