WACO, Texas – No. 47 Baylor men’s tennis defeated UTRGV, 4-0, and No. 31 Texas Tech, 5-2, on Saturday at the Hurd Tennis Center.

Tadeas Paroulek picked up two more wins in singles play, including a decisive win over No. 42 Olle Wallin to clinch the conference opener over a red-hot Texas Tech team who came in with a six-match win streak over five ranked opponents.

Juan Pablo Grassi Mazzuchi left his singles match unfinished in the first match of the day, but came out to win against Texas Tech. That win marks No. 100 for the senior in collegiate singles play.

MATCH ONE

The Bears claimed the doubles point with a pair of 6-1 wins on Courts Two and Three. Luc Koenig and Grassi Mazzuchi beat Karlo Krolo and Sam Whitehead on the second court before Justin Braverman and Christopher Frantzen followed up to clinch on the third, defeating Chris Lawrance and Agustin Salazar.

In singles, the Bears sped out to win all six first sets. Frantzen was the first to claim a singles point for the Bears, 6-2, 6-2, on Court Five, while Paroulek followed with a 6-3, 6-2 win on Court One.

Braverman came through to clinch the match on court six, 6-2, 6-4, over UTRGV’s Lawrance.

MATCH TWO

The Bears attacked first in doubles, as Paroulek and Zsombor Velcz won their match, 6-4.

Finn Bass made his return to the court to reunite with Grassi Mazzuchi after missing 12 matches from injury. The 12th-ranked pair played a hard-fought match but fell 6-4 to Piotr Pawlak and Ranco Ribero. On Court Three, Braverman and Frantzen dropped a 6-3 to give the Red Raiders the doubles point.

The Bears came out swinging in singles, taking five of the six first sets.

Ethan Muza claimed the Bears’ first point in a 6-3, 6-3 win on Court Five over Lorenzo Esquici, who sat atop a seven-match win streak entering in. On three, Marko Miladinović won a 6-3, 6-1 match to put the Bears on top at 2-1.

A 7-5, 6-3 victory by Grassi Mazzuchi marked his 100th singles win in collegiate competition and had the Bears just one point away from victory.

On one, No. 94 Paroulek defeated No. 42 Wallin, who was on a seven-match win streak. The Bear defeated the Red Raider, 6-1, 7-6(5), to clinch the Bears’ first conference win of the season.

Playing out the rest of the match, Koenig dropped the only singles match of the day in a hotly contested 6-7, 5-7 decision. Velcz was the last win on Court Two. His 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 victory rounded out a 5-2 win for the Bears.

QUOTABLE

Head coach Michael Woodson

On the momentum of a six-match streak…

“We went into this this year thinking it this might take some time with this team to really get into the groove of being great competitors, not just as a team but as individuals. They've just done such a good job of individually working on the things that they need and collectively just becoming better competitors. Over time, they've used the tough experiences that they've had in the tough matches against the top programs as fuel as a learning experience. It’s not easy to win in the Big 12, every match is a battle, but we were able to utilize the home court advantage and see it pay off. We played a pretty clean match and having Finn [Bass] back is really great to see.”

WHAT’S NEXT

The Bears take a conference road trip to TCU on Thursday at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center at 6 p.m.
