WACO, Texas – Baylor women's golf has signed Ilani Short, head coach Jay Goble announced Thursday. Expected to be a mid-year enrollee, she will join the Bears with four years of eligibility beginning in January 2023.
Associate Head Coach Carly Ludwig believes Short will be able to help the team as they push for a third-straight trip to the NCAA Championships this spring.
“Ilani has been on a fantastic trajectory, and her game is in a very good place,” Ludwig said. “Coming off a third-place finish in the Australian Order of Merit, she has an opportunity to continue to improve this fall. With her talent and work ethic, she will be ready to compete for a spot in our lineup when she gets to campus in January.”
A native of Brisbane, Australia, Short joins the Bears following a decorated junior career that saw her reach No. 1 in the Australian Girls’ National Order of Merit in 2022, the same year she was named to the Queensland Junior State team. Additionally, she finished as a runner-up in the South Australian Junior Masters and finished third at the Tasmanian Junior Amateur Championships.
The incoming freshman also represented Queensland in the Australian Under-15 School Championships in 2019 and has been on the Queensland Junior High-Performance Squad since 2017. A three-time winner of the Indooroopilly Club Championship, Short became the youngest winner in the championship’s 97-year history in 2017.
Short joins a group of incoming freshmen that includes Silje Ohma from Bergen, Norway and Mallory Matthews from Hondo, Texas. Sera Hasegawa transferred from East Tennessee State, where she was an all-conference performer as a freshman. The roster of returners includes four of the six players that competed for BU at the NCAA Championship, including Britta Snyder, Rosie Belsham, BaiMai Seema and Hannah Karg.
Baylor will open the season Sept. 24-26 at the Schooner Fall Classic in Norman, Okla. The Bears finished third at Belmar Golf Club in 2021 after winning the event in 2020.
