Bears look for season sweep of the Mountaineers Sunday

WACO, Texas – The No. 13-ranked Baylor volleyball team looks to sweep the season series with West Virginia on Sunday in a 12 p.m. match on ESPN2.

The Bears (18-4, 7-2 Big 12 Conference) are one match into the second half of the league slate and will meet the Mountaineers (7-15, 0-9 Big 12) for the second time on Sunday.

Fans under the age of 12 can grab a tote bag while supplies last for trick-or-treating around the concourse pre-match, and fans of all ages are encouraged to wear their costumes to the match. Masks are not allowed in the Ferrell Center.

BU boasts a 10-1 home record on the season, falling only to then-No. 1 ranked Texas. Baylor leads the series with WVU in Waco, 9-2, and overall, 21-3. The Bears are on a 15-match winning streak against the Mountaineers.

The first time the two teams met this season was on Oct. 8 in Morgantown, Baylor sweeping WVU, 3-0. It was BU’s ninth sweep of the season. The Bears have since had a 10th when they won against Rice in three on Oct. 12.

Baylor is coming off a 3-1 win over Oklahoma and is currently on a three-match winning streak. Freshman setter Averi Carlson has accrued four-consecutive double-doubles, dating back to the match with the Longhorns on Oct. 15. The Lucas, Texas, native is second in the conference and top-25 in the nation for assists per set at 10.78.

Senior middle blocker Kara McGhee led the team in kills against Oklahoma with 15, a career-high, and is currently ranked 19th in the NCAA in hitting percentage (0.402) as well as fifth in the nation for blocks per set with 1.54 and sixth in the nation for total blocks at 125.

West Virginia has not won a Big 12 contest yet this season and come to Waco off back-to-back sweeps from Texas and Iowa State. Fifth-year senior Adrian Ell is the only conference player to have recorded a triple-double this season, let alone two, posting 24 kills, 10 digs and 15 assists against Texas Tech on Sept. 24 and 18 kills, 14 digs and 19 assists against Kansas on Oct. 19, both at home.

Head coach Reed Sunahara is in his eighth season in Morgantown and, much like Baylor, the squad has seven freshmen on the roster. They return seven letterwinners and one starter from the 2021 season.
