CABO SAN LUCAS, Mexico – Baylor women’s golf finished in eighth place after round one of the Battle at the Beach on Friday at Club Campestre San Jose.

For a second-straight round, BU was led by Sera Hasegawa and Rosie Belsham, whom each turned in even-par 71s.

She made two more bogeys at Nos. 1 and 4 but closed with two pars to finish her opening-round 76.

Playing as an individual, senior Anika Veintemilla shot a 1-over 72 to finish Friday in a tie for 20th. After an opening par at No. 17, the senior double-bogeyed No. 18 and followed with bogeys at Nos. 2 and 4. HIGHLIGHTS

  *   With an opening-round 72, Anika Veintemilla set a new career-best first-round score.
  * With an eagle on Friday, Silje Ohma has made at least one eagle in all three events this fall.
  * Sera Hasegawa has now played six of her seven rounds as a Bear at par or better.

QUOTABLE:
Head coach Jay Goble – “I saw some great things today. Sera got off to a tough start but fought her way back to shoot even par. It was windy today, which made it tough to hit greens, but her short game was great down the stretch to go bogey-free on her final 16 holes. Rosie did not have her best start either but finished with 3-straight birdies. It was really cool to see both of them finish their rounds that way.”

WHAT’S NEXT
The tournament will continue with a shotgun start on Saturday morning at 9:00 a.m. CT. The Bears will play with Houston, North Texas and Arkansas. Live scoring will be available at Birdiefire.com.<https://m.birdiefire.com/tournament/134152/>
