SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Baylor women’s basketball senior transfer Dre’Una Edwards has been named to the 2023 Katrina McClain Award Watch List, the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame and Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) announced on Thursday.

Named after the two-time All-American and 1987 National Player of the Year, the annual award in its sixth year recognizes the top power forwards in women’s NCAA Division I college basketball. A national committee of top college basketball personnel determined the watch list of 20 candidates.

A transfer from Kentucky, Edwards earned a Preseason All-Big 12 honorable mention in her first year in the league. Edwards was unstoppable for the Wildcats during their 10-game winning streak toward the end of her junior campaign. During that stretch, Edwards averaged 20.5 points per game, including a career-high 30 at Missouri. Her game-winning 3-pointer against No. 1 South Carolina helped the Wildcats secure the SEC Tournament title last season. Edwards finished the year second on the team in scoring with 16.8 points per game off 44.1 percent shooting from the field.

Edwards joins teammates Ja’Mee Asberry (Ann Meyers Drysdale) and Aijha Blackwell (Cheryl Miller) as selections to the Women’s Starting Five watch lists.

Players can play their way onto and off the list at any point during the 2022-23 season. Fans are encouraged to participate in Fan Voting, presented by Dell Technologies, in each of the three rounds starting Friday, Oct. 21. In late January, the watch list of 20 players for the 2023 Katrina McClain Award will be narrowed to 10 and then to just five in late February. In March, the five finalists will be presented to Miller and the Hall of Fame’s selection committee where a winner will be selected.

The recipient of the 2023 Katrina McClain Award will be presented on a to be determined date, along with the other four members of the Women’s Starting Five. Additional awards being presented include the Nancy Lieberman Award (Point Guard), Ann Meyers Drysdale Award (Shooting Guard), Cheryl Miller Award (Small Forward) and the Lisa Leslie Award (Center), in addition to the Men’s Starting Five.
