THE RUNDOWN
Set 1
BU started behind at 2-0 but Lauren Harrison started the Bears’ scoring with a kill, and an attack error following from TTU tied it up. Keeping the pace with each other until 4-4, Elise McGhee and Riley Simpson entered the match and made an immediate impact. Simpson served up an ace to make it 5-4, then McGhee made it 7-5 with back-to-back kills. The McGhee sisters got the block on the next play to further the lead. Averi Carlson threw down a dump at 9-6, then Allie Sczech and Alexis Dacosta each got kills to keep the momentum going at 11-7. The media timeout came just after Mallory Talbert and Sophia Keene each tallied a kill, 15-9. TTU got a block out of the pause, and back-to-back attack errors from the Red Raiders made them call for another at 20-13. The McGhee sisters got another block out of it, then Kara got a kill at 22-15. Sczech got two kills to push it to set point, with Harrison delivering the final blow at 25-20.

Set 2
Texas Tech got the first point of the set once again, but Sczech followed it up for BU’s first point right away. Talbert and Sczech tied it up at 3-3 with a block, then Talbert got the kill at 5-3. TTU went on a run, but Talbert ended it to put the Bears back within one at 8-7. Elise McGhee tied it again at 9-9, then Harrison gave the Bears the lead again. Kara McGhee and Talbert got kills to make it 14-12, followed by a Lauren Briseño ace to head into media timeout. Out of it, Tech got a kill, followed by one from Sczech, but TTU served up an ace of their own, Bears still in the lead at 16-15. Talbert got a kill, but then the Red Raiders went on a three-point run and BU called time. Tech called time after Baylor went back up at 20-19 thanks to Talbert and Kara McGhee kills as well as a Talbert ace. Another BU timeout, then another Texas Tech timeout and BU is up 23-22. Texas Tech took three-straight points to finish the set on top, 25-23.
Set 3
The third set started in Baylor’s favor for the first time on the night with a bad set from TTU, but Tech got a block just after. Harrison had a kill at 5-3, but then it was tied at the 5th through 9th points. Lauren Harrison got a kill at 12-12, but the Bears fell behind just after. At the media timeout, BU was down 15-13. Back-to-back blocks from TTU brought in Elise McGhee, who got a kill just after, then one from her sister, now only down two, 18-16. Both teams fighting, it tied at 19-19 thanks to Sczech, then BU took the lead under Harrison, Tech calling time. Back-to-back attack errors had them put in for another pause just after. Sczech and Harrison continued the valiant effort, but the Red Raiders caught up at 24-24 behind Reagan Cooper. Harrison pushed the Bears ahead, then again at 26-25, but Elise McGhee ended the set at 27-25 with a kill.

Set 4
Two sets won and one to go, the fourth set started with a big block from Sczech and Kara McGhee for the Bears. McGhee made it 4-0 with a kill, and a block from Sczech and Talbert called for a Texas Tech timeout at 7-1. Dominant from the beginning, it continued with Harrison making it 8-1, then 9-2. Talbert and Elise McGhee got kills to further the lead at 11-5, with another kill from McGhee to make it 12-5. Out of a timeout was a TTU attack error, then another Kara McGhee/Sczech block. Moving right along, Harrison got a kill at 16-12, then Sophia Keene served up an ace, followed by a Talbert kill. Tech called time, then made a final push. QUOTABLE
Head Coach Ryan McGuyre
“Always great to get a win. Everyone in our conference is so, so, so good. That’s an extremely well-coached team, a 14-win team on the season. To be one of their few losses is good. Again, a lot of credit to Tech for fighting with us. They were missing a setter, I don’t know why, so for a few of their rows they were doing some unique things that we definitely didn’t practice against. But, it took us a while to figure those things out and be good. That final set, I thought we started out strong with some great serves, some good blocks. Mallory had a quiet night of hitting .500, 13 kills. Kara’s still blocking for us well. Thought we probably should have defended the blocks better tonight. But, scrapped by to win a fun, tight third set. Sometimes you got to win ugly. Third set was a little ugly, and then we looked cleaner to finish.”
WHAT'S NEXT
The Bears hit the road and face Kansas State in Manhattan on Saturday, Oct. 22, for a 1 p.m. CT match on ESPN+.
