HOCKLEY, Texas – Baylor men’s golf finished eighth at the Big 12 Play, closing with a win over West Virginia and a loss against Texas on Wednesday at Houston Oaks.

Drew Wrightson earned two points with a pair of victories on the final day, the first two match-play victories of his career.

Top-seeded Texas Tech beat Oklahoma 3-2-1 in the championship match to claim the title. Tech and Baylor have now combined to win four of the five Big 12 Match Play Championships.

THE RUNDOWN
Match 1 vs. West Virginia
Wrightson secured the match’s decisive point with a 1-up win over Will Stakel. After Stakel won the second hole to gain the early edge, Wrightson wrestled it back with a win at No. 1. He then took his first lead at No. 4. The two took turns with the lead as Stakel took it back at No. 7 and then again at No. 10. Wrightson won the next two holes though, to go to their 18th hole with a 1-up lead and closed out the match with a par.

Trey Bosco won his match 4&3 over West Virginia’s Kaleb Wilson. Wilson took the early advantage with a win at the second hole, No. 16. After tying things through five holes, Bosco fell down again by as many as two until wins at Nos. 4, 6, 7 and 8 saw him flip the match to lead by two. Bosco finished him off with wins at Nos. 10 and 11 to close out the match in convincing fashion.

Zach Heffernan collected his first win of the event with a 2&1 victory over Todd Duncan. Heffernan had to dig out of an early hole, falling 1-down after two holes. Heffernan would tie the match three times with wins at Nos. 17, 4 and 6 before taking his first lead with a par at No. 7. Duncan would tie the match a hole later, only to see Heffernan win Nos. 10 and 11 before closing the match out at No. 12.

Johnny Keefer tied his match with Max Green on Wednesday morning. The senior won three of the first four holes to take a 2-up lead. Green won the next two, followed by two more wins from Keefer to get back to 2-up. The San Antonio native's lead swelled to 3-up with a win at No. 7, but Green battled his way back to 1-down with one hole to play and beat Keefer on the final hole to halve the match.

Jonas Appel fell 3&2 to Jackson Davenport in the final round of pool play. The two played the match even through the first six holes before Davenport broke through with his first win at No. 5. An Appel bogey at five and another at No. 8 dropped him to 2-down with six holes to play. The freshman birdied No. 10 to get back within one, but two Davenport wins over the next three holes closed out the match in his favor.

Luke Dossey fell 3&2 to Trent Tipton in the morning session. Tipton broke through with a win at No. 2 to go 1-up through five. Dossey would win the next hole, but Tipton took the next two to go 2-up. The Austin native would get within one with victories at No. 7 and No. 10, but could get no closer as Tipton closed out the match with a win at No. 13.

Match 2 vs. Texas
Wrightson continued his winning ways in the championship session with a 1-up win over Texas’ Jacob Sosa. Wrightson held the advantage for most of the match after taking a 1-up lead on his fourth hole of the day at No. 16. Wins at No. 2, 6 and 7 pushed his lead to 3-up, before Sosa pulled back even with three straight wins at holes No. 8, 9 and 10. A birdie at No. 11 put Wrightson back in front for good as he closed out the match with a par on the last hole.

Keefer secured another half-point with a tie against Travis Vick. Starting on No. 15, Vick struck first with a win at No. 16 before Keefer got it back to even at No. 17. Vick won at Nos. 1 and 3, but two-straight wins by Keefer drew them even, where they stayed through 13 holes. Keefer took his first lead of the day with a birdie at No. 10 to take a 1-up lead. Vick would beat Keefer on the final hole to record a tie and clinch the match for Texas.

Dossey also collected a tie against Texas’ Mason Nome on Wednesday. Dossey controlled the match early with wins at Nos. 14 and 16 to get a 2-up lead through three. Nome won No. 18 and No. 1 to get back to even as the two traded wins at Nos. 2 and 3, giving Dossey back his 1-up lead. Dossey would grow his lead back to 2-up with wins at No. 7 and then again at No. 9. Nome would claim victories on their 16th and 18th holes to claim a tie.

Zach Heffernan fell to Alejandro Gonzalez 3&2 in the championship session. After halving their first five holes, Gonzalez broke through with a win at No. 18. Heffernan won No. 1 to get back to even, but fell 3-down with Gonzalez victories at Nos. 2, 3, and 4. Heffernan would draw within two with wins at Nos. 5 and 10, but could not cut into the lead anymore, and Gonzalez put the match away at No. 11.

Jonas Appel fell 2&1 to Texas’ Keaton Vo in the championship session. Appel won the opening hole at No. 14 and then won again at No. 17 following a Vo win at No. 16. As they flipped over to the front nine, the pair traded wins at Nos. 2-5 as Appel maintained his lead through that stretch. Vo tied the match again with a win at No. 8 and added two more wins at Nos. 10 and 11 before closing out the match at No. 12.

Following a win in the morning session, Trey Bosco fell 3&1 to Texas' Christiaan Maas in the afternoon. Maas opened with wins on each of the first two holes, and his lead would swell to 3-up with a win at No. 1. Bosco would get wins at Nos. 8 and 10, but Maas closed him out with wins at Nos. 11 and 13.
