THE RUNDOWN
AMES, Iowa – No. 26 Baylor (12-4, 3-0) handed No. 20 Iowa State (11-1, 0-1) its first loss of the season with a 4-3 victory Friday afternoon at Ames High School. It also marked the Cyclones’ first loss at home since April 2019, a streak that reached 23 before the Bears came to town.

BU now moves to 3-0 in league play for the second-straight season.

The Bears got out to a 1-0 lead as they won the doubles point for the 14th time this season.

After No. 55 Miska Kadleckova and Sofia Cabezas topped Ana Carmen Zamburek and Anita Sahdiieva on court two, 6-3, No. 5 Mel Krywoj and Alicia Herrero tied things up with their 6-4 win over Thasaporn Naklo and Christin Hsieh, 6-4.

It all came down to court three where Paula Barañano and Alina Shcherbinina battled for the 7-5 win over Ange Oby Kajuru and Chie Kezuka.

No. 123 Shcherbinina made it 2-0 Bears with her 6-1, 6-1 win on court four over Anna Supapitch Kuearum. Kajuru put the Cyclones on the board with her 6-2, 6-4 win over Herrero on court two, but Krywoj extended the BU lead with her 6-4, 7-6, 1-0 (10-8) win on court three over Kadleckova.

ISU fought back to make it 3-2 overall as No. 67 Naklo topped Isabella Harvison on court one, 6-3, 6(4)-7, 6-2. Barañano had the answer on court six as her 6-2, 6-1 win over Sofia Cabezas clinched the win for Baylor.

HIGHLIGHTS

  *   Baylor has won the doubles point in 14 matches this season.
  *   Alina Shcherbinina has won a team-best 14 matches.
  *   Paula Barañano also had double-digit wins on the season with 13.
