WACO, Texas – Baylor baseball rising redshirt junior infielder Travis Sanders has been invited to participate in the fourth-annual MLB Home Run Derby X on July 26 at Dell Diamond, home of the Round Rock Express.
Sanders will represent the Bears as a member of the Houston Astros team, headlined by former big-league Gold Glove winner Josh Reddick and former Florida State softball standout and 2018 national champion Elizabeth Mason.
The Astros will compete against teams representing the Texas Rangers, Boston Red Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers. The Red Sox lineup includes former MLB All-Star Manny Ramirez, longtime MLB veteran and Austin native Kevin Millar and current Texas Longhorns softball player Katie Stewart. Former National Player of the Year Reese Atwood of UT softball and former Rangers, Red Sox and Dodgers great first baseman Adrian Gonzalez are also confirmed for the Round Rock event. Exact lineups featuring former MLB sluggers and top women’s baseball and softball stars will be announced soon.
MLB Home Run Derby X is an electric new 3-on-3 baseball format built around power hitting and athletic catching. Each event features four teams, with each team led by an MLB legend. A single game takes 30 minutes; each player gets one at-bat lasting two and a half minutes. During an at-bat, the opposing team is in the outfield. Teams earn offensive points for hitting home runs and defensive points for making catches.
Bonus points are earned by hitting home runs through a center-field target. During each at-bat, batters can call for a hot streak of five swings where everything counts double. In the final minute of an at-bat, batters can tag in a teammate to finish with a flourish.
This year, HRDX is following a season-long format known as the Race to Salt Lake City. Winning teams at any of the six events this year will gain entry to a two-day, winner-take-all final in Salt Lake City. A Wild Card team and a special Salt Lake City Bees team will round out the eight-team field that competes for the HRDX trophy and a $200,000 prize.
Sanders, a 2025 All-Big 12 honorable mention selection, finished his first season in the green and gold hitting .335 with nine doubles, one triple and eight home runs. He scored 44 runs and drove in 25 while swiping eight bags. A native of Copperas Cove, Texas, Sanders spent two years at Texas Tech before transferring to Baylor, where he had a career year.
