WACO, Texas – Baylor Baseball cruised past HCU Tuesday night, 9-1, behind a strong offensive output and quality pitching performances from multiple Bears.

It was an all-around effort to secure the win with six arms combining to allow just one run without walking a batter and striking out 11. Redshirt senior right-hander Cole Stasio led the way out of the bullpen after redshirt sophomore southpaw Caleb Jameson’s solid start, tying a career best with four punchouts. Junior righty Grayson Murry also shined in relief, fanning a career-high three batters in a scoreless frames.

The Bears were firing on all cylinders offensively, sparked by long balls from middle infielders redshirt sophomore Travis Sanders and senior Tyriq Kemp. The duo of Sanders and Kemp has now homered a combined six times in BU’s last three games, as both have recently had multi-home run performances.

Three BU hitters collected multi-hit performances, including Sanders, senior catcher Cortlan Castle and redshirt designated hitter Hunter Simmons, who went 4-for-4 to match his career best.

THE RUNDOWN
After the two sides traded scoreless frames in the first, Sanders singled and Simmons got aboard with an infield single to kickstart the Bears in the second; both advanced into scoring position thanks to an HCU throwing error. Senior outfielder Ty Johnson drove Sanders in on a sacrifice bunt to give the Bears an early 1-0 lead.

On the mound, Jameson hurled 2.2 scoreless innings and fanned one before handing the ball off to Stasio in the third. After getting an inning-ending groundout and starting the fourth with back-to-back punchouts, Stasio gave up a game-tying solo home run, but bounced right back to strikeout another to end the frame.

In the bottom half, Baylor answered with a solo home run of its own as Sanders launched his fifth big fly of the season to retake a 2-1 lead.

The Bears added to their advantage in the sixth, loading the bases and driving in one on an RBI walk by Castle to increase the lead to 3-1. Murry came on to start the seventh and worked around a leadoff knock to fan a career-high three batters and put up yet another zero.

Kemp led off the bottom of the seventh with a moonshot to right field, then Baylor blew things open and plated five more runs in the inning. Knocks from Sanders, freshman infielder Pearson Riebock and a throwing error sandwiched between hits from Simmons, Castle and redshirt senior outfielder Enzo Apodaca put BU ahead 9-1.

Senior righty Will Glatch pitched a scoreless eighth with two strikeouts before sixth-year senior closer Gabe Craig shut the door in the ninth, setting down the side in order to secure the victory.

QUOTABLE
Head Coach Mitch Thompson
On tonight's performance...
“That’s three good ones in a row, and that’s great to see … (previously) we weren't playing that well, we would give up a few out of the bullpen or not hit enough, and that was the first time this year that happened. I’m thankful, I think we're out of it, but we just gotta keep our eyes focused on the future and trying to get better and get ready for TCU.”

Senior INF/RHP Hunter Teplanszky
On making the transition from infield to the mound...
"We were actually in Kansas, and I was messing around throwing sliders. I pitched a little bit, a lot when I was younger, but a little bit in high school. I actually grew up playing with Cortlan Castle, so he used to catch me when we were about 9-10-11 years old. But, I was throwing sliders in the outfield and [assistant coach Zach Dillon] was like, 'That looks good, you want to try it?' And I was like yeah, sure, I'd love to, anything to give me some time on the field. Threw a couple bullpens, and then three live hitters in practice, and then got that first outing at Texas State, so it's been fun for me. It's an opportunity for me to kind of soak up everything from the guys that have been pitching for years.”

Redshirt Senior DH Hunter Simmons
On regaining momentum headed into the final stretch...
“It's huge coming off that win against Utah, especially how we've been playing the last couple of weeks. I think this one’s a confidence boost; I think it's going to get us going again. We're in the right direction — a lot of hits, a lot of runs and a lot of good pitching, so just going to try to keep doubling down on that.”
