TULSA, Okla. — Baylor men’s golf fought through 36 holes to finish Tuesday in 13th place at the Big 12 Championship at Southern Hills Country Club.

The home of the 2022 PGA Championship played tough on Tuesday with a stroke average of 74.41, almost 4.5 shots over par. Starting on No. 10, BU held its ground early in the first round, sitting at the top of the leaderboard for much of its first nine. However, it struggled on the inward half, shooting 15-over on the way in to drop into the bottom half of the field. The Bears shot a 21-over 301 in the second round, falling to 31-over after round two.

Davis Ovard led the way for Baylor in the first two rounds with a 3-over 143 to tie for ninth. Ovard shot a second-round 68, one of just 10 rounds in red figures on day one. The sophomore is seven shots off the pace of the overnight leader, Arizona State’s Connor Williams.

THE RUNDOWN
First Round
Zach Heffernan started the round in red numbers with a birdie at No. 10, followed by a bogey at No. 11. With no further blemishes on the back half, he made the turn at even par. The senior carded a string of bogeys on Nos. 1, 5, and 9 to finish the round tied for 19th with a 3-over 73.

Davis Ovard also started quickly, landing an early birdie at No. 12, but gave the shot back with a bogey on No. 13 to turn at level par. Cruising in his second nine, Ovard stumbled a bit down the stretch with a double bogey at No. 4 and three straight bogeys at Nos. 7-9 to close out round one.

Similarly, Jonas Appel turned in a 5-over 75 for the first round. The junior opened with seven straight pars before running into some trouble, playing his next five holes at 7-over, making bogeys at Nos. 17, 18, 1 and 3, around a double-bogey at No. 2. He would finish strong, however, playing his final six holes at 2-under on the strength of birdies at Nos. 5 and 6.

Drew Wrightson shot a 7-over 77 in the morning session. He got off to a steady start with just three bogeys on his outward nine at Nos. 11, 16 and 18. After two more bogeys at Nos. 3 and 4, he found his first birdie of the day at No. 5 but would finish with three straight bogeys at Nos. 7-9.

Vincent Sternfeldt carded 8-over 78 in the morning round, jumping into red figures quickly with a birdie at No. 13. Following a 4-over close to his outward nine, the freshman had a string of five bogeys at 3, 5, 6, 7 and 9 to finish the morning session tied for 70th place.

Second Round
Ovard got off to a quick start in the second round, making a birdie at No. 1, and after giving a shot back with a bogey at No. 4, he carded back-to-back birdies at Nos. 5 and 6. Back-to-back bogeys at Nos. 9 and 10 put him back at even par, but he settled in to play his final eight holes at 2-under on the strength of birdies at Nos. 11 and 17.

Jonas Appel picked up a shot from his first round, shooting a 4-over 74 in the afternoon to tie for 41st. An up-and-down first nine saw Appel make just two pars at Nos. 8 and 9 after making birdies at Nos. 2, 4 and 5 and bogeys at Nos. 1, 3, 6 and 7. His second nine included just four pars around bogeys at Nos. 10, 13, 14 and 15 and a birdie at No. 11.

Zach Heffernan shot a 9-over 79 in the second round to fall into a tie for 56th. The senior bogeyed five of his first nine holes at Nos. 3, 4, 5, 6 and 9. After a triple bogey at No. 11, he made one final bogey at No. 12 before closing with six straight pars.

Drew Wrightson shot a 10-over 80 to drop 14 spots into a tie for 74th. Four straight pars to open the round gave way to three bogeys at Nos. 5, 8 and 9 to close his front nine. Starting with two pars on the back nine, he played his final seven holes at 7-over.
