LUBBOCK, Texas – Behind senior outfielder Wesley Jordan’s three-home run day, Baylor baseball evened its weekend series at Texas Tech with a dominant 18-4 victory on Saturday at Rip Griffin Park in Lubbock.
Jordan became the 10th Bear in program history to hit three home runs in a single game, going 4-for-4 with six RBIs on the day. Redshirt sophomore infielder Travis Sanders also added a career-high four hits and drove in three, while redshirt sophomore infielder Jack Little added to the power display with his sixth home run of the year. All nine BU starters collected at least one hit and scored a run in the offensive onslaught, marking the first time the Bears have done so under third-year head coach Mitch Thompson.
All the while, freshman lefty Carson Bailey turned in a quality performance on the mound, going six strong innings and allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits and two walks while fanning six, earning his second quality start of the season and picking up his third win of the season. Senior right-hander Caleb Bunch collected a three-inning save, finishing things out with three frames of one-hit and one-run ball.
THE RUNDOWN
Baylor wasted zero time getting things going offensively, exploding for six runs in the top of the first, the team’s most in the opening frame this season. Jordan hit his first long ball of the day, a two-run shot, to start the scoring. Then, freshman infielder Pearson Riebock reached on an RBI fielder’s choice and later scored on Sanders’ RBI double off the center field wall. Little put the cherry on top of the six-run frame with a two-run shot that traveled 458 feet, the longest home run by a Bear so far this season.
In the second, Jordan launched a solo home run to make it 7-0, then Riebock singled in another run to extend the lead. A three-run blast off Jordan’s hot bat made it 11-0 in the third before Tech got on the board in the home half.
The Bears tacked on three more runs in the top of the fourth as Little reached on an RBI fielder’s choice before senior catcher Cortlan Castle and redshirt senior outfielder Enzo Apodaca each brought runs home with RBI groundouts.
Meanwhile, Bailey had found his groove on the mound and quietly racked up six strikeouts while allowing two earned runs on five hits and two walks. He fanned three of the last four batters he faced before handing the ball off to Bunch, whose only blemish was a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh.
After Sanders had singled in one in the seventh, he added to his tally for the day with another RBI knock in the top of the ninth. Senior outfielder Ty Johnson’s two-run single put the exclamation point on the afternoon as BU evened the series and set up a rubber match in the Sunday finale.

STAT OF THE DAY
3 – Senior OF Wesley Jordan became the 10th Bear in program history to hit three home runs in a single game.
QUOTABLE
Head Coach Mitch Thompson
On the offensive performance…
“It’s a funny game sometimes. You fight and fight and fight and can’t get anything to happen offensively, then all of a sudden you break out and have a bunch of guys swinging the bats well. Fun to see Wesley Jordan get up there and go out of the yard in the first three innings of a ballgame. Several guys up and down the lineup with multiple RBIs, so it wasn’t just one guy, it was a team effort. We need to come out and do it again tomorrow.”
Senior OF Wesley Jordan
On his three-home run performance…
“It’s something I’ll remember for sure. I guess so, I was [seeing the ball well]. I think we just need to take the pressure off ourselves sometimes. We want to do it so much for the guys next to us that we try to do too much. When we just stay calm and stay within ourselves, it’s a lot better.”
Redshirt Sophomore INF Travis Sanders
On his weekend so far…
“It’s always good to come back and play against your former team, it gives you a little more edge and makes you lock in a little more. I’m just glad to be out here with my teammates competing and getting the win today. It was a good team win.”
WHAT’S NEXT
Baylor (22-12, 6-8) and Texas Tech (10-21, 6-8) return for a rubber match on Sunday with first pitch set for 1 p.m. at Rip Griffin Park in Lubbock.
