BRYAN, Texas — Baylor men’s golf finished Saturday in a tie for fourth place with Sam Houston State at the Aggie Invitational as the defending champs of the event shot a 19-over 595.

Redshirt junior Drew Wrightson shot his third 68 of the season to lead the tournament after one round before eventually falling into a tie for 12th with a 3-over 147. Texas A&M’s Phichaksan Maichon rode a 3-under 141 to the top of the individual leaderboard on Saturday.

No. 19 Texas A&M enters Sunday’s final round with a seven-shot lead over No. 6 Oklahoma on the heels of a 3-under 573.

THE RUNDOWN
First Round
Wrightson opened  with eight straight pars before getting on a roll, starting with a birdie at No. 9 to make the turn at 1-under. He followed with birdies at Nos. 11-15 to climb to the top of the leaderboard. Bogeys on two of his final three holes, dropped him to 4-under, which was good enough to hold the first-round lead.

Jonas Appel also finished the first round in red figures with a 1-under 71. An early bogey at No. 3 was erased with a birdie at No. 4. The Encinitas, Calif., native added another at No. 6 to turn with a 1-under 31. A clean card on the second nine saw him finish with his sixth round at par or better this season.

Davis Ovard shot a 1-over 73 to finish the first round in the top 15. After a bogey at the opening hole, the sophomore strung together 11 straight pars before getting back to level par with a birdie at No. 13. Bogeys at Nos. 15 and 16 dropped him to 2-over on the round, but he recovered with a final birdie at No. 18.

Zach Heffernan shot a 2-over 72 in the morning session. A bogey at No. 4 was quickly erased with an eagle at No. 5 to sneak into red figures. He would finish the front nine with a 1-under 35 after a bogey at No. 7 and a birdie at No. 8. A bogey at No. 10, double bogeys at Nos. 13 and 16 and birdies at Nos. 11 and 14 added up to a 3-over 39 on his homeward half.

Vincent Stjernfeldt shot an 8-over 80, while Sam Dossey carded a 4-over 76 as an individual to finish out the first round.

Second Round
Wrightson opened his second round with a bogey at No. 1 and added three more at Nos 6, 7 and 8 to make the turn with a 4-over 40. After four pars to open his second nine, he made three more bogeys at Nos. 14, 16 and 18.

Heffernan closed day one with a 6-over 78 to tie for 31st. His opening nine consisted of birdies at Nos. 4 and 9, bogeys at Nos. 3 and 5, a double-bogey at No. 1 and a triple-bogey at No. 8, adding up to a 5-over 41. The senior added two more bogeys on the back nine at Nos. 15 and 18 around three bogeys at Nos. 11, 16 and 17.

Ovard shot a 7-over 79 on Saturday to finish tied for 31st. An early bogey at No. 2 dropped him over par, ahead of two double-bogeys at Nos. 8 and 9, moved him to 5-over to close out the front side. His first birdie of the round came at No. 10 but was followed by bogeys at Nos. 11 and 13. The sophomore carded another birdie at No. 15, which preceded two more bogeys at Nos. 16 and 17.

Appel shot a 9-over 81 for just his second non-counting score of the season. He bounced back from a triple-bogey on the opening hole with a birdie at No. 2. His second birdie of the round at No. 8 was sandwiched between a bogey at No. 7 and a double-bogey at No. 9. Three more bogeys followed on the second nine at Nos. 11, 13 and 14 ahead of a double bogey at No. 18 to move him into a tie for 31st.

Stjernfeldt carried the water for Baylor in the second round with a 1-over 73, a seven-shot improvement from his opening-round 80. A bogey-free front side was highlighted by birdies at Nos. 1, 6 and 7 for a 3-under 33 on the outward half. His first bogey of the round came at No. 10 but was offset by another birdie at No. 15. He played his final three holes at 4-over par with bogeys at Nos. 16 and 18 around a double-bogey at No. 17.

Sam Dossey had the second-best round of the day for BU, playing as an individual with a 3-over 76.

HIGHLIGHTS

  *   Baylor’s 27 birdies were the fourth most in the field on Sunday
  *   Zach Heffernan was one of just three players to make an eagle through the first 36 holes
  *   Vincent Stjernfeld’s second-round 71 was his third round at par or better for the Bears this season
  *   Drew Wrightson now has 22 rounds at par or better for his career

STAT OF THE DAY
13 — Drew Wrightson’s opening-round 68 was the 13th round in the 60s for his career and his third of the season.
