LUBBOCK, Texas – Junior left-hander Ethan Calder turned in a quality start, but Baylor baseball dropped its series-opener at Texas Tech, 9-2, Friday night at Rip Griffin Park in Lubbock.

Calder tossed six innings and allowed just one run, scattering six hits while walking three and striking out three in his second quality start of the year. Though the Bears led 2-1 after six complete, the Red Raiders got to the BU bullpen for eight late runs, three of which were unearned, to pull away.

Redshirt sophomore infielder Travis Sanders and senior outfielder Ty Johnson each picked up multi-hit efforts in the loss. Both logged doubles, in addition to redshirt sophomore infielder Jack Little’s double, to account for BU’s three extra-base hits on the night.

THE RUNDOWN
After Calder worked out of danger and left the bases loaded in the bottom of the first, the Bears got it going in the top of the second with back-to-back singles by redshirt senior designated hitter Hunter Simmons and freshman infielder Pearson Riebock to start the frame. An RBI double by Sanders opened the scoring and Johnson’s RBI knock made it a quick 2-0 advantage for the visitors.

Calder did well to minimize damage in the home half of the second. After two-straight singles and a sacrifice bunt, a walk loaded the bases and a sacrifice fly brought in one. But, BU’s southpaw starter came back with a big strikeout to leave two more Red Raiders aboard and keep the Bears in front at 2-1 through the first two innings.

Both sides traded zeros over the next three frames, as Calder continued to work out of jams. He had retired 10 of 11 until a pair of two-out Tech singles in the bottom of the fifth, but an inning-ending fly out to Johnson in center squashed the threat.

After another 1-2-3 frame in the sixth, Calder handed the ball off to senior right-hander Will Glatch who entered in the bottom of the seventh. That’s when TTU plated four runs on two hits and two Baylor errors to take a 5-2 lead. The Red Raiders added four more in the bottom of the eighth to take a 9-2 advantage into the final frame.

Despite Sanders’ second knock of the night, two Tech relievers combined for the final three outs and put a stamp on the series opener.

HIGHLIGHTS
• Senior INF Tyriq Kemp extended his hitting streak to nine games.
• Redshirt senior DH Hunter Simmons recorded his 98th-career hit and sits two shy of 100 career knocks.
• Redshirt sophomore INF Travis Sanders logged his seventh multi-hit game of the year.
• Senior OF Ty Johnson recorded his 10th multi-hit game of the season.
• Junior LHP Ethan Calder turned in his second quality start of the season, going six innings with one run allowed on six hits and three walks while fanning three.

STAT OF THE DAY
6 – Ethan Calder pitched into the sixth inning for the third time this season and collected his second quality start of the year.

QUOTABLE
Head Coach Mitch Thompson
On tonight’s ballgame…
“The bad thing about tonight’s loss is I feel like we wasted a really nice effort from Ethan Calder, I thought he was great. He pitched well for six innings and we’re all sick about how this one finished up. He threw the ball better, continued to compete and made pitch after pitch. He got through their lineup three times and we couldn’t ask for much more than that.”

WHAT’S NEXT
Baylor (21-12, 5-8) looks to even the series with Texas Tech (10-20, 6-7) in game two of the weekend series on Saturday, with first pitch set for 2 p.m. at Rip Griffin Park.
