FORT WORTH, Texas — Baylor women’s golf finished Monday in seventh place on the heels of a 21-over 589 on a windy Monday at the Charles Schwab Women’s Collegiate at Ridglea Country Club.
Sera Hasegawa continued her strong play Monday, shooting back-to-back rounds at par or better following an opening-round 71, with a 1-under 70 in round two. The senior enters the final round three shots back of a three-way tie at the top between Grace Kilcrease and Thitaporn Saithip of Oklahoma State and Texas A&M’s Vanessa Borovilos.
The Bears trailed Wake Forest by just two shots at the conclusion of the first round, but the Demon Deacons strung together a solid second round to take the team lead by three shots over second-place Texas A&M with a 3-over 571.
THE RUNDOWN
First Round
Ashleen Kaur came out firing with an opening round 67 to get within one shot of the first-round leader Kilcrease. Starting at No. 12, Kaur opened with eight-straight pars before back-to-back birdies at Nos. 2 and 3. Bogeys at Nos. 4 and 8 dropped her back to even par only to see her play her final three holes at 4-under with birdies at Nos. 9 and 10 and holed out for eagle at No. 11.
Hasegawa ran into a bit of trouble with a double bogey at No. 13 but bounced back with a birdie at No. 14. On the heels of back-to-back bogeys at Nos. 15 and 16, the senior made the turn with an eagle at No. 18. Two more bogeys dotted her card at Nos. 1 and 4 before closing with a flurry of birdies at Nos. 6, 8 and 9.
Jenny Lee strung together an impressive opening round with a 1-over 73. Opening with a double-bogey at No. 13, the freshman responded with birdies at Nos. 14, 16 and 18. Another double bogey at No. 1 was followed by bogeys at Nos. 3 and 4 to drop her to 3-over. She played her final eight holes at 2-under, highlighted by birdies at Nos. 7 and 9.
Silje Ohma finished round one with a 2-over 73. The Bergen, Norway, native carded a couple of bogeys early on at Nos. 12 and 14 to make the turn at 2-over. The junior got back to even with birdies at Nos. 3 and 5, before finishing with two more bogeys at Nos. 6 and 10.
BaiMai Seema recovered from bogeys at Nos. 12 and 14 with birdies at Nos. 18 and 1. Playing her next four holes at 4-over, she finished with four straight pars to end the round.
Bridget Boczar shot a 2-over 73 as an individual in round one.
Second Round
Hasegawa carded her sixth round at par or better in her last seven chances with a 1-under 70, one of just six rounds in red figures in the afternoon. Struggling to 3-over in her first four holes, Hasegawa battled her way back, starting with a birdie at No. 18. She added three more birdies on a bogey-free second nine to get back in red figures for the round and the championship.
Lee opened with a double bogey at No. 13 for the second-straight round, adding bogeys at Nos. 17, 18, 1, 3 and 5 to play her first nine holes at 7-over. Birdies at Nos. 6 and 8 bookended a bogey at No. 7 to finish with a second-round 78 to pull into a tie for 31st.
Seema also finished her day with a 7-over 78 to close the second round tied for 45th. A birdie at No. 12 was surrounded by bogeys at Nos. 10, 14, 15 and 16 for a 3-over 38 on her opening nine. Playing the first five holes of her second nine at 5-over, Seema finished strong with back-to-back birdies at Nos. 8 and 9.
Kaur closed the day with a 9-over 80 to settle into a tie for 20th. The sophomore opened with a bogey at No. 12, the first of eight for her on the day.
Ohma recorded a 10-over 81 to close Monday in a tie for 51st. A double bogey on her third hole of the day at No. 13 was followed by eight more bogeys in round two.
Boczar concluded her first day with a 4-over 75 to wrap Monday in a tie for 25th.
HIGHLIGHTS
* Baylor’s two eagles led the field on Monday.
* Sera Hasegawa has shot par or better in six of her last seven rounds.
* Hasegawa finished with the second-most birdies on Monday (8).
* Bridget Boczar finished the day with the second-best par-5 scoring average (4.33).
