TULSA, Okla. — Baylor men's golf shot a 24-over 584 on Monday to settle into seventh place at the Clerico at Cedar Ridge Country Club.
The course proved challenging, with no teams finishing under par on Monday when play was halted for darkness. The home team, Oral Roberts, finished its round and led the team standings through 36 holes, shooting a 4-over 564 for the day, seven shots clear of second-place UTEP.
Baylor’s Jonas Appel enters the final round just three shots off the lead held by Oral Roberts’ Preston Richardson.
THE RUNDOWN
First Round
Vincent Stjernfeldt finished the first round in third place, leading Baylor with a 2-under 68. The Big Swede strung together an impressive birdie string at Nos. 6, 7, and 8.
Appel carded a pair of bogeys on the front nine but scored a pair of birdies to make the turn with an even-par 35. Two more birdies pushed him to 2-under before one last bogey saw him finish the round with a 1-under 69.
Sam Dossey carded four bogeys on his opening nine to make the turn with a 3-over 38. A birdie to start his second nine at No. 1 was offset by a bogey at No. 6 to finish off a 3-over 73.
Zach Heffernan recorded 5-over 75 in the first round. Heffernan went out with a 4-over 39 but improved by three shots on his second nine with a 1-over 36 to finish the round tied for 46th.
Corbin Null made his first appearance in the lineup Monday, notching a 10-over 80 in his lineup debut. A steady start saw him open with seven pars and two bogeys to turn with a 2-over 37. He played his final seven holes at 8-over.
Second Round
A bogey at No. 16 was the lone blemish of Appel’s opening nine in the second round. The junior closed out his day with a pair of birdies on the back nine at Nos. 2 and 7 to lead Baylor with a 1-under 69 for the day, good enough to tie for fourth.
Playing his first two holes at 3-over, Dossey rebounded with a pair of birdies to make the turn with a 1-over 36. Bogeys at Nos. 3 and 5 dropped him back to 3-over before finishing the day in a tie for 18th on the heels of a 2-over 72.
Coming off a great first round, Stjernfeldt reached 3-under par with a birdie on his second hole of the round. However, the back nine proved to be more of a challenge playing his final 13 holes at 10-over, seeing him close the day with a 9-over 79.
Heffernan went out with a 3-over 38 and closed with a 5-over 40 to end the day in a tie for 63rd.
Null recorded his first birdie of the day on hole No. 14 with an up-and-down second round, ending the day in 72nd after a 9-over 79.
