WACO, Texas – Baylor linebacker Dillion Doyle and defensive tackle Siaki Ika were named to the 2022 Bronko Nagurski Trophy Watch List for National Defensive Player of the Year, as announced Tuesday by the Football Writers Association of America.
Doyle, a senior linebacker from Iowa City, Iowa, and Ika, a junior transfer from Salt Lake City, Utah, will lead a Baylor defense that returns seven starters in 2022.
In 2021, Doyle was an All-Big 12 Honorable Mention selection by the league’s coaches in addition to being named to Dave Campbell’s Texas Football’s All-Texas Team. He finished second on the team with 90 tackles and third with 8.5 tackles for loss. He has already been recognized as a Preseason First-Team All-Big 12 selection by Athlon, Phil Steele, and the Big 12 media, in addition to being named Second Team All-Texas by Dave Campbell’s Texas Football Magazine.
Ika was a member of the Bears’ defensive line that ranked second in the Big 12 in rush defense last season, allowing just 118.4 yards per game. He was the 2021 Big 12 Defensive Newcomer of the Year and was an Honorable Mention selection for Big 12 Defensive Lineman of the Year. Additionally, he was named to the All-Big 12 First Team by the Associated Press, All-Big 12 Second Team by the coaches and All-Texas First Team by Dave Campbell’s Texas Football.
Ika tied for the third-most sacks on the team with 4.0 and tied for the sixth-most tackles for loss with 6.0, and was named to the Outland Trophy Watch List on Tuesday, which honors the nation’s best interior lineman.
The FWAA has chosen a National Defensive Player of the Year since 1993. In 1995, the FWAA named the award in honor of the legendary two-way player from the University of Minnesota.
Ika was also named to the Outland Trophy Watch List on Tuesday, which honors the nation’s best interior lineman.
