WACO, Texas – Baylor football offensive linemen Jacob Gall and Connor Galvin joined defensive lineman Siaki Ika on the Outland Trophy Watch List, announced Tuesday by the Football Writers Association of America.
The BU trio makes up three of the 89-man list and three of the 10 Big 12 representatives for the Outland Trophy, given annually to the nation's best interior lineman.
Gall, a 2021 Second Team All-American selection by the FWAA, enters his second season with the Bears. The Buffalo transfer made an immediate impact in his first year in Waco, anchoring an offensive line that paved the way for the Big 12’s best rushing attack (219.3 ypg) en route to BU’s best season in program history.
In addition to being a FWAA All-American, Gall was also named to the Phil Steele All-America Second Team, Associated Press All-Big 12 Second Team, the Dave Campbell's Texas Football All-Texas Second Team and All-Big 12 Honorable Mention by the league's coaches.
Gall teamed up with Galvin, the 2021 Big 12 Offensive Lineman of the Year, to help the BU offensive line become a semifinalist for the Joe Moore Award, which honors the nation's best offensive line.
Galvin is coming off a big season in 2021 where he was named a First Team All-American by the Athletic, Second Team All-American by USA Today, Third Team All-American by the Associated Press and a Fourth Team All-American by Phil Steele. The fifth-year senior from Katy, Texas, was also named to the 2021 All-Big 12 First Team by the AP and Big 12 Coaches while also making Dave Campbell’s All-Texas First Team.
So far this preseason, Galvin has been named an All-American by Athlon (First Team) and Phil Steele (Second Team), and All-Big 12 First Team by Athlon, Phil Steele and The Big 12 Media. He was also named Dave Campbell’s Best Offensive Lineman in Texas and the All-Texas First Team.
Ika was a member of the Bears Defensive Line that ranked second in the Big 12 in rush defense last season, allowing just 118.4 yards per game. He was the 2021 Big 12 Defensive Newcomer of the Year and was an Honorable Mention selection for Big 12 Defensive Lineman of the Year. Additionally, he was named to the All-Big 12 First Team by the Associated Press, All-Big 12 Second Team by the coaches and All-Texas First Team by Dave Campbell’s Texas Football.
Tied for the third-most sacks on the team with 4.0 and tied for the sixth-most tackles for loss with 6.0, Ika was also named to the Nagurski Trophy Watch List on Tuesday, which is given annually to the Defensive Player of the Year.
The recipient of the 2022 Outland Trophy will be announced on The Home Depot College Football Awards, live on ESPN on Thurs., Dec. 8. The official presentation to the winner will be made at the Outland Trophy Awards Dinner sponsored by Werner Enterprises and produced by the Greater Omaha Sports Committee in Omaha, Neb., on Jan. 11, 2023.
