WACO, Texas– Baylor senior tight end Ben Sims was named to the 2022 John Mackey Award watch list on Friday, as announced by The Friends of John Mackey.

Given annually to the most outstanding collegiate tight end, the award recipient is selected by a vote of the John Mackey Award Selection Committee. The 2022 Mackey Award recipient will be presented on December 8, 2022, at The Home Depot College Football Awards Show.

Sims has played in 31 career games with 20 starts. A native of San Antonio, Texas, he has 47 career receptions, including a career-best 31 for 361 yards and six touchdowns in 2021. The former Clark Cougar also added a rushing touchdown on his career-first carry against Texas on Oct. 30, 2021. His nine touchdown receptions are the most by a tight end in BU history, while his 47 career receptions rank as the fifth-most by a tight end in program history.

The senior was previously named to the 2022 All-Big 12 Team, Athlon All-Big 12 First Team, Phil Steele All-Big 12 First Team and Dave Campbell’s Texas Football All-Texas First Team.

NFL Hall of Fame member John Mackey is considered to be the best to have played the tight end position. A tight end by which all others are measured, Mackey was a role model on and off the field, as demonstrated by his Super Bowl Championship, his commitment to community, and his place in history as the first President of the NFLPA.

The John Mackey Award, presented since 2000, recognizes 19 alumni that have played in the NFL: two-time Super Bowl Champion Daniel Graham (`01), 2006 Super Bowl Champion Dallas Clark (`02), Kellen Winslow II (`03), two-time Super Bowl Champion Heath Miller (`04), Marcedes Lewis (`05) of the Jacksonville Jaguars, 2008 Super Bowl Champion Matt Spaeth (`06), Fred Davis (`07), Chase Coffman (`08), D.J. Williams (`10), Dwayne Allen ('11) of the New England Patriots, Tyler Eifert ('12) of the Cincinnati Bengals, Austin Seferian-Jenkins ('13) of the New York Jets, Nick O'Leary ('14) of the Buffalo Bills, Hunter Henry of the Los Angeles Chargers, Jake Butt (’16) of the Denver Broncos, Mark Andrews (’17) of the Baltimore Ravens, T.J. Hockenson (’18) of the Detroit Lions, Harrison Bryant (’19) of the Cleveland Browns, Kyle Pitts (’20) of the Atlanta Falcons and 2021John Mackey Award recipient Trey McBride of the Arizona Cardinals.
