Baylor Men’s Golf Climbs to 25th Place at NCAA Championship
Bears posted 13th-best score out of 30 teams in Saturday’s second round

THE RUNDOWN
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Baylor men’s golf climbed four spots into 25th place after shooting 7-over-par 295 in Saturday’s second round of the NCAA Championship at Blessings Golf Club. The Bears improved by 19 strokes from their first round, which tied the second-largest improvement in the 30-team field.

Baylor (+33) needs to make up eight strokes and pass 10 teams in Sunday’s third round to advance to Monday’s fourth and final round of stroke play. The Bears’ 7-over on Saturday tied for the 13th-best score in the field and allowed them the move ahead of LSU (+34), Illinois (+36), Louisville (+39), Duke (+42) and BYU (+53). There are 12 teams leading BU by nine or fewer strokes entering the third round.

Oklahoma State (-10) leads the field, followed by Stanford (+2), Texas A&M (+7), Auburn (+10), Texas (+12), Oklahoma (+16), Wake Forest (+17), Ohio State (+17), California (+17), Clemson (+18), Vanderbilt (+19), Arizona State (+22), Georgia Tech (+24), Georgia (+24), SMU (+25) forming the current top-15 teams. Teams outside the current projected cut to Monday’s fourth round include UNLV (+26), Pepperdine (+27), North Carolina (+28), South Carolina (+28), North Florida (+30), TCU (+30), Georgia Southern (+31), Liberty (+32), USC (+32), Baylor (+33), and five teams behind the Bears.

Cooper Dossey led the Bears with a 2-under 70 in Saturday’s second round, moving up 63 spots on the individual leaderboard into a tie for 59th place at 6-over 150. Dossey’s 63-spot jump was second-best in the 156-player field. He started the round with consecutive birdies and remained at par or better the entire round. After falling back top even-par through eight holes, Dossey birdied Nos. 8 and 11 to get back to 2-under. He punctuated his round with a chip-in birdie on No. 18.

Braden Bailey improved by eight strokes with an even-par 72, climbing 45 spots into a tie for 77th place at 8-over 152. Bailey started with a bogey on No. 1, but he immediately got back to even-par with a birdie on No. 2 and he would not go above par the rest of the round. He made seven consecutive pars before ending the string with an eagle on the par-5 15th hole.

Garrett May trimmed two shots off his first-round score with a 3-over 75. He made birdies on Nos. 1 and 6 and was 1-under through six holes, and he finished with eight pars and four bogeys over his final 12 holes, placing him in a tie for 77th at 8-over 152.

Colin Kober repeated with a score of 6-over 78 to move into a tie for 111th place at 12-over 156. Kober recovered from a double bogey on No. 4 with a birdie on No. 6 and took the turn at 1-over before shooting 5-over after the turn. Ryan Grider shot 9-over 81 and is tied for 138th place at 16-over 160.

HIGHLIGHTS

  *   Baylor is tied for ninth in the 30-team field in par-5 scoring at 6-under 4.85, ranks 21st in par-4 scoring at 40-over 4.40 and tied for 26th in par-3 scoring at 16-over 3.40.
  *   Baylor’s 24 birdies are tied for 21st in the field, while the Bears rank 24th with 90 pars.
  *   Bailey’s eagle on No. 15 was one of just three eagles on that hole in the second round and one of only 10 eagles made anywhere on the course on Saturday.
  *   Bailey is tied for sixth in the 156-player field in par-5 scoring at 4-under 4.50.
  *   Dossey leads the team and is tied for 27th in the field with seven birdies across 36 holes.
  *   Dossey’s chip-in birdie on No. 18 was one of only nine birdies out of 156 attempts on Saturday, making it the third-most difficult hole to birdie in the round.

STAT OF THE DAY
19 – Baylor’s 19-stroke improvement from the first round tied for second-best in the field behind only Pepperdine, which trimmed 21 shots off its first-round score. Vanderbilt also improved by 19 strokes. Dossey and Bailey accounted for the majority of Baylor’s improvement, with Dossey shooting 10 strokes lower and Bailey shaving eight shots off of his score.

WHAT'S NEXT
Baylor is paired with LSU and Illinois for Sunday’s third round, and those teams will tee off on the back-9 starting at 1:17 p.m. CT. Grider is up first for the Bears, followed by Kober at 1:28 p.m., Bailey at 1:39 p.m., May at 1:50 p.m. and Dossey at 2:01 p.m. Following Sunday’s third round, the top 15 teams will advance to Monday’s final round of stroke play, with scores carrying over. Once 72 holes of stroke play are complete, the top eight teams advance to match play to determine the national champion.
