[Afamilyatwar-list] Raise Your Hands High....

I was looking at YOU, Richard Veit, when I wrote that tongue-only-partially-in-cheek post about Northern English (I have since ordered a book about its history—I think it’s wonderfully expressive).
No articles (down pit, in car, pushing pram)
Long vowels, such as toook, soooch, mooock
Slang (well, everybody has that)
I noticed “anyroad” the first time when I watched Rome, a British production. I had never had that. I did know about “chicks/birds, gas/petrol, flashlight/torch, broadcast/transmit, color/colour, center/centre, and the ever-startling collective plural: Tesco are going to begin (opposed to U.S. Tesco is going to begin).
The one expression that really baffled me years ago was a snide remark made by Callan (THAT Callan) about his sidekick: “You niffy twit!” Twit was OK, but “niffy”??? Near sent me round the twist (where US says round the bend) until I figured that out.
Now, ahem, as to Middle English...”When that Aprille....”

A couple of hints that might be helpful to viewers of SAM and other "Northern" productions:
The word "happen" can be used as a synonym for "perhaps," as . . .Happen she will scrub the muck off her husband's back before they sit down to dinner.
The word "anyroad" can be used as a synonym for "anyway," as . . .Stop by anyroad, even if it's an hour or two past midnight.
These are two recurring idioms that I have noticed.

If you have difficulty understanding the Mancunian/Yorkshire/Liverpudlian accents in some of the Granada/ITV dramas (which have no helpful subtitles). Raise them high because I’m over here in the U.S. and will have trouble seeing you, so make a real effort!
Those born in or residing in the North are excused from this exercise. Be off now!
