I was looking at YOU, Richard Veit, when I wrote that tongue-only-partially-in-cheek post about Northern English (I have since ordered a book about its history—I think it’s wonderfully expressive).<div><br></div><div>No articles (down pit, in car, pushing pram)</div><div><br></div><div>Long vowels, such as toook, soooch, mooock</div><div><br></div><div>Slang (well, everybody has that)</div><div><br></div><div>I noticed “anyroad” the first time when I watched Rome, a British production. I had never had that. I did know about “chicks/birds, gas/petrol, flashlight/torch, broadcast/transmit, color/colour, center/centre, and the ever-startling collective plural: Tesco are going to begin (opposed to U.S. Tesco is going to begin). </div><div><br></div><div>The one expression that really baffled me years ago was a snide remark made by Callan (THAT Callan) about his sidekick: “You niffy twit!” Twit was OK, but “niffy”???
