Hi Scott,
ITV was originally 14/15 regions. Granada, London Weekend, Thames, ATV etc.
Following Margaret Thatcher's franchise fiasco in 1991 the existing contractors had to bid for their franchises. It wasn't all bad news as each region had to pass a "Quality threshold". Granada won despite a higher bid from a rival. Other companies weren't so lucky.
Fast forward a few years, the bigger ITV regions took over the smaller ones. Eventually we were left with Carlton, (who wrestled the franchise from Thames in 1991) and Granada. The latter then owned the programmes made by London Weekend and Yorkshire Television.
Carlton owned the ATV, ( when securing the ITC catalogue) and its successor Central's catalogue.
Eventually Granada and Carlton TV merged as ITV which continues to this day.
New releases of ITV material are credited as ITV Studios. Older ones Granada Ventures or Carlton where appropriate
Freemantle Media now own the Thames Television archive. Studio Canal own the ABC Television catalogue. (In 1968 ABC and Rediffusion were forced into a merger and formed Thames Television).
As I understand it, Network DVD have the rights to issue ITV material. They've brought out some never previously released gems such as the 1971 London Weekend drama, "The Guardians".
I understand "The Spoils Of War" was never previously released.
Hence the question: When will they bring out AFAW and Sam?
Told me they were, "Looking into it" on asking them.

Given that AFAW, Sam, and Spoils of War (and Onedin Line, pace Mr. Murphy) have found their way onto DVD (although AFAW and Sam were previously available on VHS), how DO programs get selected/permitted to be recorded? Now that I’ve seen a Tweet or 3 about This Year Next Year and have gotten a couple of not-too-informative replies from Talking Pictures TV, I wonder who now owns rights to these Granada productions. ITV? If AFAW was popular enough to warrant two separate DVD collections AND a fresh transmission on TPTV, who was behind all this in terms of granting rights? Is there some agency (company or individual) that initiates and finalizes the process? None of this benefits me as I live in the US, unless a DVD gets created. If anyone knows anything, I’d be grateful to learn.
