KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Baylor men’s basketball’s rally came up just short Tuesday morning, as Arizona State held off the Bears for an 83-79 win in the opening round of the 2026 Phillips 66 Big 12 Men’s Basketball Championship at T-Mobile Center.

Baylor (16-16, 6-12) battled throughout and cut the deficit late behind a tough offensive performance from Cameron Carr, who poured in a game-high 25 points. The Bears had chances in the closing minutes but couldn’t overcome Arizona State (17-15, 7-11 Big 12)’s efficient shooting night, as the Sun Devils shot 57.4-percent from the field to secure the four-point victory.

Carr knocked down five three-pointers and went 8-for-9 at the free-throw line to lead Baylor, while Isaac Williams IV added 15 points and Tounde Yessoufou chipped in 14. Caden Powell and Dan Skillings Jr. each finished with 10 points as the Bears placed five players in double figures. Baylor shot 42.6-percent from the field but struggled from beyond the arc, finishing 8-of-33 from three.

THE RUNDOWN

Although Caden Powell scored the game’s first points to open the postseason, Baylor fell into an early offensive lull, missing four straight shots before the first media timeout and trailing 6-3. Tounde Yessoufou sparked the Bears out of the break with a driving layup, but Baylor struggled to find a rhythm, making just three field goals in the first eight minutes as Arizona State built a 16-7 lead.

Cameron Carr connected from deep to halt a Sun Devil surge, but Arizona State pushed its advantage to double digits during a 13-3 run to take a 21-10 lead. The Bears answered with a burst of momentum late in the half, using an 8-0 run over a minute-and-a-half span to trim the deficit to 29-25 with six minutes remaining.

Arizona State responded by forcing three Baylor turnovers and holding the Bears without a field goal for more than three minutes to rebuild its cushion. Carr knocked down his fourth 3-pointer of the half before the break and led Baylor with 15 first-half points, the sixth time this season he has scored at least 15 in a first half, but the Sun Devils carried a 44-35 advantage into the locker room.

Out of halftime, Arizona State maintained the pressure, but Williams got Baylor on the board with a layup off the glass to start the second half. Williams found his rhythm in the second, scoring seven quick points to reach double figures as the Bears continued to chip away, cutting the deficit to 61-52 with 10 minutes to play.

Baylor made another push at the under-eight media timeout, going 6-for-6 from the field to trim what had been an 11-point deficit down to five, 67-62, in a three-minute stretch. However, Arizona State halted the run with a defensive stand, forcing a three-minute Baylor scoring drought while putting together a 7-0 run to extend its lead to 74-64 with just over three minutes remaining.

The Bears closed the gap to four in the final minute behind late buckets from Carr, but Arizona State converted at the free-throw line in the closing seconds to seal the 83-79 victory.
