WACO, Texas – Baylor softball rode a dominant performance from Cambree Creager and a persistent offense to a 4-0 victory over Stephen F. Austin on Tuesday night at Getterman Stadium.

Creager tied a career-best by going the full seven innings, striking out a career-high eight batters, allowing just five hits as the Bears improved to 14-6 on the season.

BU’s offense put a runner on in every inning, breaking through for a run in the fourth and three more in the sixth to put away the upset-minded Lumberjacks.

RUNDOWN

After three scoreless innings to start the game, Baylor broke through in the bottom of the fourth. Faith Piper drew a walk before Sa’Mya Jones entered as a pinch runner and created some chaos on the bases, eventually scoring on an RBI single from Averie Waddell to give the Bears a 1-0 lead.

Baylor added insurance in the sixth inning with a three-run frame. Kaygen Marshall sparked the rally with a one-out single before Gianna Gusman doubled to deep left center to put two runners in scoring position.

With the bases loaded, Amber Toven delivered a two-RBI single to left field to plate Marshall and Gusman, and Brooklyn Carter followed with an RBI single down the left-field line to bring home Gigi Lindsey and extend the lead to 4–0.

The Bears finished with eight hits on the night, highlighted by multi-hit performances from Carter and Gusman.

QUOTABLE

Glenn Moore on Cambree Creager’s Strong Outing: “She’s had some great innings for us, but the start was the key tonight, and she came out with a really good start. From there, she just kept her composure. It was a very efficient game for her, there were very few at-bats where she fell behind in situations where she shouldn’t have. I really liked what she did tonight. I think she took it to a different level.”

Glenn Moore on the team coming together with Big 12 Play looming: “I think this game was a great segue into this weekend. You never know exactly how a team is going to show up — we’ve had some roller coaster moments — but to put together two games back-to-back where we played pretty consistently makes me feel good. I think our practices are starting to look more like what we want. There are fewer wide-eyed moments, and while there will always be bumps along the way, I think we’re trending upward. We’ve taken a couple steps back at times, but the last two games were probably the biggest step forward we’ve taken all season.”

Creager on What was working on Tuesday: “Honestly, the other team was allowing me to make pitches. I’ve been very one-dimensional so far this season because teams haven’t really forced me to make an adjustment. This team was really going right at me, so I had to use all of my pitches. I think that actually ended up benefitting me.”
