TUCSON, Ariz. – Surviving a long day of golf, the No. 21 Baylor women improved by five shots in Monday’s afternoon round and sit in second place after 36 holes at the Arizona Thunderbird Intercollegiate at par-72 Tucson Country Club.

With a trio of golfers in the top 20, the Bears shot 2-over 290 in the second round and are alone in second at 9-over 585. Top-ranked Stanford heads an elite 15-team field at 5-under 571, with No. 22 Arizona two strokes back (11-over, 587).

Play was suspended by darkness with seven of the teams still on the course. Colorado and Texas Tech, tied for fifth at 21-over, had two players on their final hole of the second round.

“Wow, what a long, tough day,” said Baylor coach Jay Goble. “We got here about 6 o’clock this morning, and they’re just now (at 6:45 p.m. MT) getting to dinner. All of our players got finished, but some of them didn’t.”

Senior Silje Ohma played herself into contention for medalist honors with a 3-under 69, leaving her tied for second at 4-under 140, five shots behind Stanford individual Andrea Revuelta (9-under, 135). Sophomore Malena Castro, who was 3-over through the first seven holes of the second round, closed with five birdies the rest of the way and is 13th at 1-over 145.

“Saw some standout performances by Silje, who didn’t start her best, but played really solid golf the last 27 holes of the day,” Goble said of Ohma, who had the fourth-most birdies in the field with nine. “Same with Malena, who was 3-over-par through her first seven holes today and ended up shooting 2-under (in the second round), which is amazing.”

Senior Bridget Boczar shot matching rounds of 2-over 74 and gives Baylor its third player in the top 20, tied for 17th at 4-over 148. Freshman Amelia Wan was the final scoring golfer at 8-over 152, while first-semester freshman Paloma Ibarra Ambia is tied for 73rd at 19-over 163.
