MONTGOMERY, Texas – Playing back in his hometown, Baylor freshman Tyler Sanford had the Bears’ lone sub-par round on Monday and moved into the top 10 at the Bentwater Intercollegiate after 36 rounds at par-71 Bentwater Country Club.



Sanford, one of three Baylor golfers playing as individuals, recorded one of the tournament’s 15 eagles in the opening round and followed that up with a 1-under 70 in the afternoon to tie for eighth with junior teammate Alex Heard at 1-over 143.



Tied for 12th after an opening-round score of 14-over 298, the Bears moved up five spots with a 5-over 289 in the second round and are tied for seventh at 19-over 587. The host Sam Houston leads the 14-team field with a 36-hole total of 4-over 572, followed by VCU (+9, 577), Ohio (+10, 578) and Central Arkansas (579).



Heard followed up an even-par round of 71 with a 1-over 72 that included a bogey-free back nine and is six strokes back of 36-hole leader Nathaniel Gray Lamont (5-under 137). Sophomore Vincent Stjernfeldt is tied for 28th at 5-over 147, while Auburn transfer Evan Vo and senior Jonas Appel shot 71 and 72, respectively, in the second round.



Sanford, making his collegiate debut, is tied with Rice’s Raines Watson as the low individual not playing for a team. He finished tied for third at last year’s Class 5A state tournament and won the 2024 Southern Junior Amateur.
