WACO, Texas – The ninth-ranked Baylor men’s tennis team sweeps both Midwestern State and BYU, 4-0, on Saturday. Due to rain, the BU and MSU faced inside Hawkins Indoor Tennis Center, while the conference match-up between the green and gold and BYU was brought outside to the Hurd Tennis Center once the rain cleared up.
The Bears (19-7, 5-1 Big 12) secured the doubles point and picked up singles wins on Courts Four, Five and Six to clinch the victory over the Mustangs (8-5, 0-1 Lone Star Conference). BU’s freshmen shone as Blake Anderson and Drew Hedgecoe won their doubles match 6-4 to earn the doubles point. Anderson, Hedgecoe and Calvin Baierl claimed their respective Courts for the 4-0 sweep.
The green and gold earned the doubles point with wins on Courts Two and Three. The Bears completed the sweep against the Cougars (13-7, 1-5 Big 12), winning on Courts Three, Five and Four. Junior Louis Bowden extends his win streak to six in a row.
THE RUNDOWN
MATCH ONE VS MIDWESTERN STATE
Starting in doubles, Midwestern struck first, winning Court Two 6-4. The freshmen duo of Anderson and Hedgecoe earned their first dual-match victory, 6-4, against Cesar Llamas and Jose Marquez. Junior Connor Van Schalkwyk and senior Luc Koenig extend their win streak to three matches, defeating Juan Duque and Bruno Sanchez 6-4 on Court One to clinch the doubles point for BU.
Moving into singles with the 1-0 lead, the freshmen trio of Anderson, Baierl and Hedgecoe made quick work of their first sets, with all three of them claiming set one 6-1. The Bears claimed all but one first set, with Van Schalkwyk falling in a highly contested tiebreaker 7-6 (6).
Hedgecoe didn’t stop his momentum, speeding through his second set and claiming Court Five 6-1, 6-2 for Baylor’s second point. Baierl extended BU’s lead, defeating Marquez in a dominant 6-1, 6-1 decision on Court Five.
On Court One, Van Schalkwyk won his second set 6-2 to force a third set against the Mustangs. Graduate student Alexandru Chirita won his first set 7-6 (7); however, he fell in his second set 6-4. Anderson was unable to best Tomas Leguizamon in the second set, dropping a 6-3 decision; however, the freshman bounced back in the third set with a dominant 6-0 set to clinch the match for the Bears 4-0.
MATCH TWO VS BYU
Moving to the Hurd Tennis Center once the weather cleared up, the Bears and Cougars started in doubles. Koenig and Van Schalkwyk moved quickly on Court Two, defeating BYU 6-1. On Court Three, the duo of Devin Badenhorst and Bairel defeated Caden Hasler and Hardy Owen with a dominant 6-2 decision. The green and gold clinched the doubles point and led 1-0 heading into singles.
In singles action, Baylor claimed three first sets on Courts Three, Four and Five. However, Badenhorst won his second set 6-3 to force a third set against Adam Chodur. On Court Five, Louis Bowden was speedy, winning his point with a 6-1, 6-2 decision.
Chirita won his first set with a dominant 6-1 win. In his second set, the graduate student started down 4-1; however, he quickly came back and forced a second-set seven-point tiebreaker. In the tiebreaker, Chirita won his match 6-1, 7-6 (4) to extend BU’s lead to 3-0.
On Court Four, Koenig had a very back-and-forth first set. He earned the first set win in the tiebreaker, 7-6 (3). In the second set, the senior clinched the match for the Bears and earned the second sweep of the day, winning 7-6 (3) 7-5.
HEAR FROM HEAD COACH MICHAEL WOODSON
On today’s matches…
“I thought it was good to get some different looks from a few guys; We were able to sneak out the doubles point. Really, the freshman carried us. They clinched the match – Blake in the third set, and two easy wins at 4 and 5 with Calvin and Drew.
To come away with a 4-0 win tonight was impressive, especially for guys like Luc and Alex. Luc is playing better and better, and Alex – it's been a little while since he’s been able to completely win a match even though he’s been in some winning positions.
Obviously, a really long day for Calvin. It’s good to see him back from the illness and starting to play closer to his level, and Louis just continues to win very quickly when we need him. It’s great to put a point on the board like that."
WHAT’S NEXT
Baylor travels to Lubbock, Texas, to battle No. 66 Texas Tech (12-9, 2-4) in one last away contest for the regular season on Thursday, April 9. First serve is set for 5 p.m.
