COLUMBIA, Mo. – The Baylor men’s cross country squad got a PR time from junior Straton Miller on Friday in the Black Invitational 8K race at the Gans Creek Classic, while sophomore Ruth Kimeli made her season debut and ran a sub-21-minute time in the Gold Invitational 6K.
On the men’s side, the Bears finished 25th with 681 points in a team race led by UCLA and Ohio State, respectively. Sophomore Jack Sterrett led the way for the second-consecutive meet with a time of 25:08.1 and 148th-place finish, with Miller 171st at 25:21.0, breaking his previous best by 29 seconds.
Rounding out the scoring runners for the men were junior Nolan Keenan (25:42.0, 198th), sophomore Caden Blitz (26:10.0, 218th) and freshman Caleb McCarver (26:15.8, 222nd). Junior Ethan Wrase, in his season debut, placed 238thoverall with a time of 26:40.4.
Running as an individual, Kimeli jumped out with the lead pack in an elite Gold Invitational field and was 15th through the first 1,000 meters, clocking a 3:06.2 time that left her just two seconds out of the lead. But she fell to 41st at the midway point and eventually fell to 95th overall with a time of 20:48.4.
Running shorthanded for the second-straight meet, the Baylor women were in the top half of the field and had three runners in the top 100 individually midway through the race. But Texas transfer Mackenize Browne slipped to the back of the race by the 4,000-meter mark and eventually dropped out, leaving the Bears with only four runners.
Sophomore Ella Perry led the team for the second meet in a row, placing 88th with a 6K time of 22:09.9. She was followed closely by freshman Rachel Haws (89th, 22:10.8), with Evanna Jacobsen (172nd, 23:26.1) and Sally Corder (178th, 23:33.2) rounding out the Baylor contingent.
Finishing an abbreviated regular season, the Baylor men and women will run at Texas A&M’s Arturo Barrios Invitational Oct. 17 in College Station.
