ARLINGTON, Texas – Baylor cross country kicked off the 2025 season at Friday’s Gerald Richey UTA Invitational, with the women finishing fourth and the men seventh in the 5K races at the Harold Patterson Sports Complex.

Running shorthanded, with all-region runner Ruth Kimeli held out of the meet, the women recorded a pair of top-10 finishes. Sophomore Ella Perry was sixth with a personal-best time of 17:53.2, just ahead of UT transfer Mackenize Browne in eighth at 18:05.2.

“For a lot of these teams, this is their second meet of the season,” Baylor head coach David Barnett said. “And those two really stuck their noses in there and competed really well.”

Since it was the Bears’ season-opening race, Perry said “this meet was all about focusing on competing rather than focusing on a time.”

“I was so excited to get on the line with our new teammates,” Perry said, “and we all did amazing. I’m so excited for the upcoming season.”

Freshman Rachel Haws placed 14th in her collegiate debut with a time of 18:25.5, followed by sophomore Sally Corder (25th, 18:54.2) and freshman Evanna Jacobsen (61st, 20:04.3).

Picking up where he left off, sophomore Jack Sterrett led the way for the men, finishing 24th with a time of 15:32.0. Sterrett held off junior teammate Straton Miller (25th, 15:32.4) in a sprint to the line.

Juniors Aiden Ramshaw (34th, 15:41.7) and Nolan Keenan (45th, 15:55.7) and sophomore Caden Biltz (61st, 16:18.2) rounded out BU’s scoring runners, with freshman Caleb McCarver (63rd, 16:24.6) nipping at Biltz’s heels in his collegiate debut.

“Like any sort, until you blow the whistle, you just don’t know,” Barnett said. “But overall, more good than bad. I’m excited to get back to work and get ready for the next meet.”

After a two-week break, Baylor will go back on the road for the Gans Creek Classic on Sept. 26 in Columbia, Mo.
