WACO, Texas – Baylor soccer notched a 1–0 victory over the Texas Longhorns Thursday evening at Betty Lou Mays Field, delivering its first win over the former conference rival since 2017.

Alysiah Lockette scored the decisive goal in the 39th minute, marking Baylor’s first score against Texas since Sarah Norman’s goal in 2019.

Baylor goalkeeper Azul Alvarez posted her fourth shutout of the year, anchoring a defense that has now gone four straight matches without conceding a goal. The Bears have allowed just one score all season, coming in a 1–1 draw with Texas A&M, and remain undefeated against SEC opponents with a 2–0–1 record.

THE RUNDOWN

Baylor and Texas played a near-even first half, with both teams trading chances. The Bears held a narrow 8-7 edge in shots after the first 45 minutes, but Texas threatened early when Ava McDonald tested goalkeeper Alvarez with a shot in the fourth minute. The Longhorns wouldn’t get another on-target attempt until the 64th minute.

Baylor struck first in the 39th minute when Lockette megged Texas keeper Mateya Dessieux off a pass from Aryanna Jimison, giving the Bears a 1–0 lead.

In the second half, Baylor’s offense came alive, outshooting Texas 12-6 and keeping the Longhorns pinned back for much of the period. The Bears’ next-best opportunity came in the 74th minute, when three consecutive shots from Lauren Omholt, Theresa McCullough and Jimison failed to find the net.

QUOTABLE

Head coach Michelle Lenard

Opening Statement…

“We've been talking about how good teams don't just have one good game, but they need to be consistent and stack good performances. Today was a great example: two tough opponents, consistently playing well, managing the game through all of the highs and lows. There are going to be those in soccer games, especially against good opponents, and I feel like our team is maturing and learning how to do that. I felt like we could’ve had a second or third goal there, but when we didn't get it, we stayed together and we did the defensive work we had to do.”

On keeping up the defensive pressure…

“We have to have that killer instinct to put teams away, and up until about the last five or six minutes, when it's important to start managing the game and trying to kill the clock, we want to try to get that second goal. We really felt like if we'd got the second goal, it would have killed the game, but we didn't, so we had to do the defensive work that was required of us. But that's a good shift for us because we were able to keep the pressure on more.”

UP NEXT

Baylor has a road test Sunday at 7:30 p.m. at Texas State, but returns home one final time in non-conference play to play Abilene Christian on Sept. 14.
