LUBBOCK, Texas – In the first day of competition at the Jarvis Scott Open in the Sports Performance Center, Baylor track & field made history, breaking three program records with Alexis Brown in the 60-meters and long jump and Nathaniel Ezekiel in the 400-meters.
THE RUNDOWN
Brown, competing in the two events on the day, broke her PB time twice in the 60m. In the first round of the women’s 60m, Brown came out with a first place finish at 7.23. In the semifinals, Brown broke out and recorded the fastest time by a Baylor Bear since 2011 at 7.14. Her impressive 7.14 mark not only etched her name into the history books but also ranked as the third-best time in the NCAA this season, 0.04 seconds shy of first place.
Just a mere fifteen minutes later, Brown began her competition in the long jump. Already reigning as the record-holder that she broke twice in just the 2025 season, Brown took it another step further with a 22-3.75 mark to break her own record for the third time. Brown now ranks No. 2 in the NCAA and fourth in the world.
Going to the men’s 400m, Nathaniel Ezekiel became the first person in the NCAA this season and the first Baylor Bear in program history to record a sub-45 time, coming in at 44.92. The extraordinary mark puts Ezekiel as No. 1 in the world for the 2025 season thus far and ranks as the 12th-best all-time mark in the 400m.
Overall as a team, the Bears had a successful day in the Sports Performance Center at Texas Tech. In the women’s 60m, all five Bears in competition advanced to the semifinals. There, three ladies of Brown (7.14), Royaltee Brown (7.284) and Tiriah Kelley (7.286) all recorded PB times to move on to the finals. Royaltee Brown finished with a silver medal in second place in the finals.
In the 60-meter hurdles, Mason Dossett made his track & field debut as a dual-sport athlete, coming in with a 7.92 time to advance to the semifinals.
In the women’s 400m, six Bears took part, but they were led by Calisha Taylor and Sima Lucero. Taylor, recording a PB time in back-to-back meets, earned a top-five finish at 54.03. Lucero shaved off nearly a second on her PB time at 54.90 to finish in 12th.
In the field events, freshman Igor Olaru threw for two PB makrs of 60-10 and 60-11.5 in the men’s section B weight throw to finish in first place.
Alongside Brown in the women’s long jump, freshmen Janae De Gannes and Iyanna Webb continue to find success. De Gannes jumped to her second-best mark of the season of 20-10.5 to finish in second place, while Webb recorded a PB mark of 19-7 to finish in sixth.
MIKE ON THE MIC
“Good first day at the Jarvis Scott meet,” said head coach Michael Ford. “We just keep getting better and better. You start off with Nathaniel [Ezekiel] running what he did today in the 400. To break 45, to run 44.92, the number one time in the country so far at least for this week and so far, I’m very happy for Nate and Coach Dalton and how they performed today.
Then you go to Lex [Brown] who I don't know if anybody had two school records in maybe less than 15 minutes. We always talk about her jumping, but she's been putting some stuff together in her 60 and definitely wasn't surprised. I mean she PR in the in the semifinal or the first round and then ran a really good fast. 7.14 in the semifinal. Didn't run the final just because she was still long jumping and I just really wanted to get her two races in. But also really proud of Royaltee Brown and Tiriah Kelley. They both have the season-best in to PR in the 60.
I thought Logan Logan [Todorovich] did really well in the 60-meter hurdles to help her with her multi then and then she also did a great job on a long jump. I thought in the 400, I thought the four women ran well. I think Sima [Lucero] had a PR to finally break 55 and Calisha Taylor ran another great of 400, so they were all coming around at the right time, so overall thought we had a really good meet.
I mean we had I think four girls four girls that made the finals in a long jump too so thought we did really well today. We'll get back after tomorrow, I think that's the biggest thing that I took out of this meet. I thought Igor [Olaru] had a good meat also and he's just getting better and better. We just gotta keep on putting the work in, but overall the team did well today and I think we'll have some really good performances tomorrow.”
