WACO, Texas – No. 13 Baylor men’s tennis secured a senior night victory over Texas Tech, 4-0, its eleventh season sweep.

The Bears (21-8, 6-1) extended their winning streak to seven games, five being conference matches. Baylor currently ranks second in the Big 12 with a chance to claim the co-conference title on Sunday against No. 2 TCU.

THE RUNDOWN

Starting off in doubles, Baylor took control early over Tech (12-10, 2-5). The South African duo of Devin Badenhorst and Luc Koeing claimed Court Two in a 6-3 victory. On Court Three, Zsombor Velcz and Alexandru Chirita fell to Takeyasu Sekiguchi and Tyler Stewart 6-4.

With the doubles point coming down to Court One, the No. 25 pair of Oskar Brostrom Poulsen and Marko Miladinovic clinched it for the Bears. The senior duo earned a 7-5 victory to give BU the early 1-0 advantage heading into singles.

The Bears moved quickly in singles, with BU getting all six first-set victories. On Court Four, Chirita finished first, earning a 6-2, 6-3 dub against Ludovico Vaccari. Louis Bowden garnered a first set bagel to give himself an early advantage. In the second set, Bowden was able to close out with the win 6-0, 6-3 to extend the Green and Gold’s lead to 3-0.

The No. 99 ranked competitor, Velcz, won his first set at 6-3. In a very back-and-forth second set, Velcz was able to clinch the win for the Bears 6-3, 7-5. The 4-0 victory against the Red Raiders was BU’s eleventh sweep of the season, the fourth at 4-0.

HEAR FROM HEAD COACH MICHAEL WOODSON

"It’s always better to win on senior night,” said head coach Michael Woodson. “We’ve done it this way for a while, and you never know how much you want to play it up because it’s emotional. Maybe I'm the only one who gets emotional, but I love these guys so much that it’s hard for me to see them go. This team is really close. We're hosting the conference championship, I think we’re in a position to host the first and second rounds of the NCAA Tournament, so it feels better when we know this isn’t the last time we’re playing at home. That makes it feel better, but it’s special nonetheless to see these guys come out here, to have their family around, to see the support they have is really special.

I think we started slow. I don’t know if it was a combo of not being ready to go or being a little emotional from the whole idea that we're playing on senior day, but as they have for most of the season, we competed really well when our back was against the wall. We snuck out the doubles. There was no way we should’ve won the doubles point after being down a break on all three courts. Heck of an effort from the guys, and I really challenged them after the doubles point to step on the gas and they all did.

You could tell Oskar and Marko were pretty nervous just playing on their senior night in singles, but they competed really well. Some great performances. It’s amazing to see this. Every year it gets me. Just seeing these guys grow up and grow into the young men that you hope and dream to be is special.”

WHAT’S NEXT

The Bears take a trip up north on I-35 to wrap up the regular season against the No. 2 TCU Horn Frogs on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center in Fort Worth.
