Baylor Men’s Tennis Concludes Regular Fall Season with NCAA Bids

WACO, Texas – After a weekend spent with Baylor men’s tennis spread across a trio of tournaments, the Bears finished off its regular season slate with two Bears earning singles bids to the NCAA Individual Championships that will be hosted at the Hurd Tennis Center later this month.
THE RUNDOWN
At the ITA Sectionals hosted in Fort Worth, four Bears competed and found success. Devin Badenhorst and Oskar Brostrom Poulsen both earned their bids to the NCAA Individual Championships. Badenhorst won out 3-0, defeating two ranked opponents, including No. 27 Pablo Alemany (Memphis) 6-2, 6-2 in the Round of 16 and No. 72 Aristotelis Thanos (Michigan State) 6-2, 6-0 to finish as a semifinalists and claim his bid.
Brostrom Poulsen went 3-1 on the weekend, qualifying through a quarterfinal playoff win. The senior earned his highest ranked win in his career over No. 9 Jack Anthrop (Ohio State) 6-3, 6-2 to advance to the quarterfinals. Brostrom Poulsen defeated No. 41 Isaac Becroft (Oklahoma State) 6-4, 6-2 to earn his singles bid into the NCAA tourney.
Competing in the consolation singles bracket, Louis Bowden made the most of his time in Fort Worth, going 3-1 and finishing as a finalist. Bowden tabbed his highest ranked singles win over No. 27 Pablo Alemany (Memphis) 4-6, 6-1, 10-4. Marko Miladinovic went 0-2 in the main draw of singles over the weekend.
At the ITA Conference Masters Championships in Rome, Georgia, Zsombor Velcz competed in the singles bracket and Imran Daniel Hazli and Luc Koenig competed as a doubles team. Daniel Hazli and Koenig made it to the Round of 16 before falling to No. 4 seeded duo from Gardner-Webb. Velcz advanced to the quarterfinals, just one win away from earning a bid to the NCAAs, before falling to 5-8 seeded Tiago Silva (The Pacific).
Staying home in Waco, Luis Jose Nakamine and Justin Braverman hosted teams for the Brazos Challenge. The duo went 1-1 in doubles while Nakamine went 2-1 and Braverman going 0-2 in singles. Nakamine held a 10-win streak dating back to last weekend at the Ralston/Neufeld Coaches Challenge before suffering a loss from Mathis Bondaz (Arizona State).
WHAT’S NEXT
The four Bears qualified to the NCAA Individual Tournament, Badenhorst (singles, doubles), Brostrom Poulsen (singles, doubles), Miladinovic (doubles) and Velcz (doubles), begin preparing for competition that will take place from Nov. 19-24 at the Hurd Tennis Center. Seeding was released by the NCAA on Monday with duos Miladinovic/Brostrom Poulsen earning the No. 2 seed and Badehorst/Velcz with a 5-8 seeding. Draws are scheduled to be released on Saturday, Nov. 16.
