WACO, Texas – In the last qualifying tournament of the fall season, Baylor women’s tennis had a ticket punched to the NCAA Doubles Championship, hosted at home at the Hurd Tennis Center beginning Wednesday, Nov. 20.

Liubov Kostenko and Cristina Tiglea were the champions of the doubles draw at the 2024 ITA Central Sectional Championship, hosted by the University of Michigan. The appearance in the final match punched their ticket to nationals in the final chance at qualification this fall.

Other members of the Baylor women’s tennis squad played through the weekend at the Rice Invitational, going 4-5 in singles and 1-2 in doubles.

THE RUNDOWN
With a perfect 4-0 on the weekend, Tiglea and Kosteko won their way to the ITA Central Sectional title with two wins over the host school, defeating Bayley Sheinin and Ava Bruno in the first round and Lily Jones and Jessica Bernales in the final. They become the first Bear pair in the national championship since All-Americans Alicia Herrero Liñana and Mel Krywoj qualified in 2022.

Also in Ann Arbor, Kostenko won the first singles round over Memphis’ Leonie Moeller but fell in the round of 16 to the No. 1-seeded Julia Garcia Ruiz. Tiglea lost her first singles round to Iowa State’s Anna Supapitch Kuearum in a second-set breaker.

Playing in the consolation draw, Zuzanna Kubacha got two wins over Michigan’s Bernales and Texas Tech’s Andreea Lila.

In a rainy Houston, Brooke Thompson stacked two wins in the singles draw while Nanaka Sato and Lauren Littell each got one. The doubles draw saw Thompson and Sato beat UTRGV in the first round before falling in the semifinal and third-place match.

Baylor hosts the 2024 NCAA DI Tennis Singles and Doubles Championships at the Hurd Tennis Center beginning Monday, Nov. 18. The doubles draw with Kostenko and Tiglea will start on Tuesday. Tickets are available now<https://baylorbears.evenue.net/events/TE>.
