BATON ROUGE, La. – Baylor track and field finished out LSU’s Battle on the Bayou at the Bernie Moore Track Stadium on Saturday in the second day of competition.

Winning the team’s only collegiate title of the day, Koi Johnson leaped out to a win in the triple jump, her first win in the event since the 2023 Razorback Invitational.

THE RUNDOWN

Johnson gave the Bears their first and only collegiate win of the day in the triple jump, going 42-9 for the collegiate meet record. At the time of competition, 42-9 was the third-best mark in NCAA DI competition so far in the spring.

In a stacked 100-meter field, De’montray Callis stole a top-10 finish in a tie for ninth place in 10.26 seconds. The junior’s time is currently 17th in the NCAA and led Ricquan Graham, who took 14th. Alexis Brown was three-hundredths of a second off her PB in the event, running an 11.45-second race for 15th overall.

Graham, Laurenz Colbert, Kamden Jackson and Callis tabbed a 39-26-second 4x100-meter relay mark to open the day on the track with a silver medal. Saturday’s relay time is under one-tenth of a second slower than the 39.19 contested at the Clyde Hart Classic one week ago.

In what was the 12th-best race of the year so far in DI, Rachel Hickey became the 6th-best to ever compete in the 800 meters at Baylor University in 2:05.62. That race was just shy of her 2:05.06 personal best to place her seventh.

In the women’s 4x100 relay, Tiriah Kelley, Imaobong Uko, Alexis Brown and Michaela Francois put together a 44.23-second race that landed them in the fifth position.

It was another PR weekend for Sydney Smith in the high jump, as the freshman cleared 5-7 for the first time to tie for fifth place with Indiana’s Mahogany Jenkins. Aïcha Moumin, in her second year of competition with the Bears, finished ninth.

The men’s high jump saw Ukurugenzi Kojo finish in a tie for 10th place with Kude Chadenga from LSU. Kojo cleared three bars, maxing out at 6-8 ¾ and missed three attempts at 6-10 ¾.

Makayla Long had a busy day in the throws, competing in both the discus throw and shot put competitions. The junior was a finalist in the discus, finishing seventh behind a 169-3 throw, before taking 15th in the shot put.

Uko was the highest-finishing Bear in the women’s 400 meters on Saturday afternoon with a 55.37 season-opener in the event. Also running, Sima Lucero took 25th and Audrey Williamson was 29th.

Improving their season-best time, Jackson, Francis, Colbert and Nathaniel Ezekiel ran a 3:05.68 4x400-meter relay race for fifth place, while the Bear women’s group of Jasmine Gryne, Kelley, Summer Sergeant and Uko closed the meet in eighth.

UP NEXT

The Bears continue the 2024 outdoor season at Florida’s Tom Jones Memorial on April 12-13 after a weekend off.
