STORYLINES

LEADING OFF

• Baylor Baseball begins an eight-game homestand on Tuesday against UTSA before a Thursday-Friday-Saturday series against Cincinnati. The Bears will round out the two-week stretch with a midweek vs. HCU on Tuesday, April 2, and a weekend series with UIW next Friday-Sunday, April 5-7.

• BU has played the 32nd-ranked strength of schedule in 2024, the fifth-best in the Big 12 to this point.

• According to Pro Baseball Radar, BU faced the nation's toughest schedule through the first month of the season based on 2023's RPI and win percentage.

• Baylor plays 26 games against the RPI top-50 this season, the most in the Big 12.

• 59% of Baylor's offense (113 of 192 hits) has been produced by underclassmen or players in their first season at Baylor.

• True or redshirt freshmen have accounted for 43% of innings pitched on the mound this season (86.0 of 200.1).

• Eighteen Bears have made their Baylor debuts so far in 2024, including 13 players making their Division I debut and nine freshmen making their collegiate debuts.

BY THE NUMBERS VS. UTSA

• Baylor leads the all-time series, 36-9, over UTSA.

• The Roadrunners won the last meeting, 8-3, in Waco on Feb. 28, 2023. Prior to then, Baylor had won each of the previous three matchups.

• BU is 7-3 against UTSA across the last 10 meetings.

• The Bears are 2-3 in midweek games so far in 2024.

• Baylor is 5-9 against fellow teams from the state of Texas this season.

• BU is 7-6 at home this year and has won six of its last eight games at Baylor Ballpark.

FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS ON THE FORTY ACRES

• Baylor won its series opener at Texas on Friday night, 4-3 in 11 innings, behind stellar pitching from Mason Marriott<https://baylorbears.com/sports/baseball/roster/mason-marriott/13001>, Patrick Hail<https://baylorbears.com/sports/baseball/roster/patrick-hail/13047> and Ethan Calder<https://baylorbears.com/sports/baseball/roster/ethan-calder/12994>.

• The win marked BU's first in Austin since May 20, 2016.

• The win also gave Baylor a three-game win streak in conference games, which was its longest such streak since April 26-May 4, 2019.

• For just the third time this season, the Bears reached double digits in both hits (11) and strikeouts (10) in the same game.

• Marriott set a career best going six innings on the mound and notched his team-leading fourth start going at least five innings and allowing less than three earned runs.

• Calder extended his scoreless innings streak to 13.2 after throwing four scoreless and hitless out of the bullpen.

• The sophomore lefty entered with the bases loaded and induced a double play and ended the frame with a strikeout to wiggle out of danger.

• Hail pitched a scoreless seventh inning before exiting and recorded an inning-ending strikeout to leave the potential tying run in scoring position.

CHECKING IN AT THE MARRIOTT

• Junior RHP Mason Marriott<https://baylorbears.com/sports/baseball/roster/mason-marriott/13001> leads the Bears in 2024 with four starts of at least 5.0 innings without allowing more than three earned runs.

• In two starts against Nebraska and Oral Roberts, Marriott combined to allow just two earned runs on five hits and struck out 18.

• Marriott's 10 strikeouts on Opening Day were the most by a Baylor starter in a season opener since Shawn Tolleson fanned 11 against Duke on Feb. 19, 2010.

PROBABLE STARTERS

• Tues. March 26 • 6:30 p.m. • RHP Tanner Duke<https://baylorbears.com/sports/baseball/roster/tanner-duke/12998> (0-2, 9.39) vs. RHP Braden Davis (0-1, 13.50)

BROADCAST INFORMATION

• Tuesday's game will be televised on Big 12 Now on ESPN+, with Mike Leslie (play-by-play) and former Baylor pitcher Pat Combs (color analyst) providing the commentary.

• Fans can also tune in to the Baylor radio broadcast on ESPN Central Texas 1660 AM/92.3 FM with Derek Smith and Tom Barfield on the call.

THE LAW FIRM OF CALDER AND HAIL

• Sophomore LHP Ethan Calder<https://baylorbears.com/sports/baseball/roster/ethan-calder/12994> and redshirt junior RHP Patrick Hail<https://baylorbears.com/sports/baseball/roster/patrick-hail/13047> are becoming BU's go-to relievers out of the bullpen, and for good reason as the duo both boast sub-1.70 ERA's.

• In nine relief appearances, Calder has posted six scoreless and four hitless outings. The southpaw's usage has not been limited to left-handed hitters, as he's gone longer than an inning six times.

• On the year, Calder owns a 0.96 ERA, has struck out 17 batters, has walked just two batters and collected BU's only save of 2024.

• Currently, Calder is riding a 13.2-inning scoreless streak and has not allowed an earned run in his last 16.2 innings pitched.

• Of all pitchers in the Big 12 with a sub-1.00 ERA, Calder has thrown the most innings (18.2).

• One of the more experienced arms in the BU bullpen, Hail has been fantastic with a 1.69 ERA across seven outings, five of which have been scoreless.

• Hail is the only Baylor reliever to have collected at least one strikeout in all of his appearances this season.

• Between the two of them, Calder and Hail have only allowed four of 14 inherited runners to score in 2024.

YOU GO, WE GO, 'ZO!

• Redshirt junior OF Enzo Apodaca<https://baylorbears.com/sports/baseball/roster/enzo-apodaca/13013> has either scored a run or driven in a run in 24 of the 42 times (58%) he has reached base this season.

• In the 62 innings that Baylor has scored at least one run, Apodaca has reached base in 31 of them (50%).

• Apodaca ranks as the third-toughest Big 12 hitter to strike out, fanning once every 10.5 at-bats.
